South Stream Productions will open the theatre year with Blackbird by David Harrower. The play will open Friday January 6, 2017 and run through Sunday, January 22, 2017 at Sonorous Road Theatre, 209 Oberlin Road, Raleigh.

DESCRIPTION:

South Stream Productions' 2016 show Time Stands Still was recently named one of the ten best productions of the year by the INDY. They are following up that success with David Harrower's acclaimed script Blackbird. Blackbird was commissioned for the Edinburgh International Festival of 2005. It went on to London's West End (Winner of the Olivier Award for Best New Play 2007), and two New York productions (the most recent of which received three Tony nominations). The play has been described as "A searing theatrical experience" (The Guardian), and "Theatre at its most elemental" (NY Times). The New Yorker said that "Harrower has the focus of a song writer, and his exquisitely wrought monologues are like odes."

The script is intense and dynamic, but its challenging subject matter is not for all audiences. DescribEd Bluntly, Blackbird is the confrontation between a woman (Una) and the man (Ray) who sexually abused her when she was twelve. Harrower somehow manages to make this story not only compelling, but achingly human. The script does not flinch from the reality of a situation that is the stuff of nightmares for most parents. Both characters revisit their past (not entirely willingly) because this event, this "relationship" has so completely crafted who they are that they simply have to face it, and each other.

The cast will consist of John Honeycutt as Ray, and Katie Barrett as Una. Brook North will direct. South Stream Productions is operated by Brook North and John Honeycutt. Previously, South Stream has presented Copenhagen, Seascape, The Caretaker, Time Stands Still, and Hughie.
