Burning Coal starts 2011 with a big month for its WillPower! education outreach program, bringing hands-on experience with Shakespeare and other topics into four Raleigh schools. Director of Education Ian Finley will teach week-long residencies at both Moore Square Museum Magnet Middle School and the Raleigh School for Children (both residencies supported by grants from the United Arts Council of Wake County). These in-class residencies will introduce Shakespeare to young students in a way that is fast, fun, and active, so that when they encounter the Bard later in their school career they approach the text ready to explore. The Raleigh School residency will also conclude with a performance of Shakescenes, an interactive production involving actors from the Burning Coal company.

Mr. Finley will also be in residence at two other schools, working on full productions. He will serve as director for Julius Caesar at Cardinal Gibbons High School and musical director for Into the Woods at Raleigh Charter High School this month.

Burning Coal will also present a new Integrated Acting Class to be taught by Broadway veteran Lori Mahl. The class will run Tuesday evenings from 7 to 10 p.m., January 4 through February 1st, 2011 in Raleigh. Tuition is $100 for the five week class. Please contact Burning Coal at 919-834-4001 or visit us online at www.burningcoal.org for further details and to enroll.

Finally, Burning Coal will present a Shakespeare class for adults this month. Exploring Shakespeare is an eight-session workshop, giving participants an opportunity to get on their feet and play with the Bard's language. No previous acting experience is necessary. The workshop will meet Monday nights, 6:30 - 9:30, January 10th - February 28th, at Burning Coal Theatre at the Murphey School (224 Polk St., Raleigh). The class fee is $155.
