Portland Shakespeare Project is thrilled to announce an innovative new play reading series in partnership with Proscenium Journal. Over the course of three evenings, Portland Shakes with Proscenium Journal, and with support from a generous grant from Stanford University's Haas Center for Public Service, will present staged readings of new plays on the Alder Stage at Artists Repertory Theatre. Performance dates are July 14, 19 and 20; seating is general admission and all shows are free to the public.

Pericles Wet by Ellen Margolis is an adaptation of Act I of William Shakespeare's Pericles commissioned by Proscenium Journal for this event. Pericles Wet will be performed together with Act I of Pericles by William Shakespeare.

The Widow of Tom's Hill

In 1918, the worst plague in human history hit America. When a small Washington town finds itself the subject of a military quarantine, a young sailor and 19 year old widow from opposite sides of the blockade engage in a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse, putting their lives, and souls, in the balance.

ABOUT Pericles Wet playwright Ellen Margolis

Ellen Margolis is Chair of Theatre & Dance at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon. Her plays include How to Draw Mystical Creatures (2004 NY Fringe Festival Award for Excellence in Playwriting, 2004 Jane Chambers Finalist, produced by ToyBox Theatre and Theatre Limina of St. Paul); Trying Not to Stare (Workshop, Portland Theatre Works through a grant from the Oregon Regional Arts & Culture Council); Picking Up the Baby (2006 NY International Fringe Festival); American Soil (Produced by Vital Theatre, New York); A Little Chatter (Commissioned and produced by Mile Square Theatre, produced by City Theatre, Finalist 2008 National 10-Minute Play Contest, forthcoming Playscripts, Inc.); When It Stands Still (produced by ToyBox Theatre); and others that have been produced throughout the United States. Some of her monologues have appeared in the Smith & Kraus Audition Arsenal series, and she is the editor of two recent volumes, Singular Voices: Monologues from the International Centre for Women Playwrights and The Politics of American Actor Training. Ellen is a proud member of the Dramatists Guild.

ABOUT The Widow of Tom's Hill playwright Aleks Merilo
Aleks Merilo is a Portland-based playwright and drama teacher. Originally from Palo Alto, CA, he holds a BA in Theater, and an MFA in playwriting from The UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television. Merilo's scripts include Exit 27 (Performed at the Landing Theatre in Houston, Texas, and The Sanguine Theatre Company in New York City), Blur In the Rear View (Winner of the James Rodgers Playwriting Contest, premiered at the University of Kentucky, Lexington) and Little Moscow (Winner of Dubuque Playwriting Contest). His plays have been performed/developed with the aide of CoHo Productions, Furious Theater at the Pasadena Playhouse, The Old Globe Theater, The Fertile Ground Festival, The Pittsburgh New Works Festival, Ross Valley Players, The Moving Arts Theater, The UCLA New Play Festival, and Portland Readers Theater, among others.
