Western Australia's Directions Disability Support Services celebrated Disability Awareness Week recently with a drama workshop at the Avocados Function Centre in Kelmscott.

The week raised awareness of the aspirations of the State Government's Count Me In vision: that we all live in welcoming communities that facilitate citizenship, friendship, mutual support and a fair go for everyone.

Disability Awareness Week included International Day of People with Disability which this year had the theme 'inclusion matters: access and empowerment for people of all abilities'.

The Disability Services Commission provided community organisations with grants of $250 or $500 for events and activities during the week, to raise awareness of the importance of access and inclusion.

Directions Disability Support Services conducted a fully accessible drama workshop, facilitated by a professional actor and performing arts facilitator for young adults with and without disability.

Commission Director General Dr Ron Chalmers said Disability Awareness Week was a chance to open up conversations that challenged people's perceptions of disability.

"The week highlights how far disability reaches into the lives and networks of West Australians from all walks of life," Dr Chalmers said.

"In 1992, the United Nations General Assembly declared 3 December as a day to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of people with disability. It's now become an important part of our own Disability Awareness Week, which is now in its sixth year."
