BWW Reviews: ANJIN, Sadler's Wells, January 31 2012
by BWW - Feb 1, 2013

In 1610 William Shakespeare wrote The Tempest and William Adams was shipwrecked onto the coast of Japan. Performed in conjunction with the RSC's season A World Elsewhere (director Gregory Dolan is also the RSC's artistic director), Anjin the Shogun and the English Samurai takes place in a politically tempestuous period of Japan's history. Yet writer Mike Poulton's story of the first Englishman to arrive and settle in Japan seems an apt and rather lovely choice for this year's J400 celebrations, marking four hundred years of UK-Japan relations.

Ohio State's Department of Theatre Presents TWELFTH NIGHT, Beginning Tonight
by BWW News Desk - Feb 1, 2013

Ohio State Theatre returns to the Lincoln Theatre following the success of last year's Macbeth with this 60-minute adaptation, intended to introduce young audiences to the joys of Shakespeare and his language. Twelfth Night tells the tale of the topsy-turvy world of Illyria, where a wise clown guides the way through a knotty maze of disguises, practical jokes, and the ever-complicated pursuit of love. A delightful cast of characters shows us the effects of revelry pushed to the limit, and how a couple of outsiders can create balance amidst the chaos.

STAGE TUBE: On This Day 2/1- THE MERCHANT OF VENICE
by Nicole Rosky - Feb 1, 2013

Today in 1915, The Merchant of Venice opened at the 44th Street Theatre. A tragic comedy by William Shakespeare, the play believed to have been written between 1596 and 1598. The title character is the merchant Antonio, not the Jewish moneylender Shylock, who is the play's most prominent and most famous character. This is made explicit by the title page of the first quarto: The mo?t excellent Hi?torie of the Merchant of Venice. The play was recenlty brought to Broadway in 2010 after a successful run at Shakespeare in the Park with Al Pacino and Lily Rabe.
