The seventh annual Justice Film Festival returns to the Sheen Center for Thought & Culture, Loreto Theater, Wednesday, November 13 through Saturday, November 16, 2019. The Justice Film Festival inspires justice seekers by showcasing films of exceptional courage and stories of redemption that are as diverse in the issues they explore as they are in geography. As always, this year's event will include feature documentaries and shorts from both well-known and emerging filmmakers, all of whom are using the medium of film to shine a light on culturally relevant social justice issues. Based on the iconic novel by George Orwell, a?oe1984a?? is the story of Winston Smith, who has come to the attention of the state of Oceania, the authoritarian state. Initially written in 1949, meaning that it was projecting 35 years into the future at that time, it is uncanny, that, 35 years later, it is being presented yet once again, and, terrifyingly, it is probably more relevant than ever before. With the brutal soul-searching, diary-exposing help of four Party Members of a?oeThe Ministry of Truth,a?? and a maiming stun gun, Winston is forced to confess his Thoughtcrimes before an unseen questioner, and the audience (surrounding the square stage in the middle on all four sides; it's almost as if they are secretly witnesses and jury) is up close and personal witnessing the torture and depredation being dealt to Mr. Smith.

From a collaboration between two of the most creative, influential podcast producers, WNYC Studios and Night Vale Presents, with music to be simultaneously released on legendary indie music label Merge Records, comes an all new adventure from the groundbreaking scripted podcast The Orbiting Human Circus.

Broadway in Detroit announced today that it will present The New Colossus at The Music Hall, February 14-16, 2020, a new play written by The Actors' Gang ensemble and The Actors' Gang Artistic Director Tim Robbins who also directed the piece.

Westport Country Playhouse will present a Script in Hand playreading of the comedy/drama, a?oeVisiting Mr. Greena?? by Jeff Baron, on Monday, November 18, at 7 p.m. The cast includes Tim Jerome as Mr. Green and Charles Socarides as Ross Gardiner. The reading will be directed by Anne Keefe, Playhouse associate artist and curator of the playreading series. Tickets are $20 each.

The Actors' Gang Artistic Director Tim Robbins to join the cast of The Actors' Gang Theater's new production of 1984, written by George Orwell and adapted by Michael Gene Sullivan. In addition to Robbins portraying the show's antagonist a?oeO'Brien,a?? he will be serving as director, as previously announced. This marks Robbins' first time on stage since The Guys in 2005. 1984 began previews Thursday, October 10th and runs through Saturday, December 7th, with an official press opening on Saturday, October 19th.

With college theatre program auditions just around the corner, we're highlighting some of the most prestigious theatre programs from all across the United States to give you insight into what to expect from their programs, from audition advice to real world experience and more. Today we're chatting with faculty from UCLA's School of Theater, Film and Television about their work-study program, New York Musical Theater Showcase, and more.

A month's worth of scary programming heads to Hulu with its annual 'Huluween' celebration. Broadway Licensing has acquired the performance rights to The Shawshank Redemption, adapted by Owen O'Neill and Dave Johns from Stephen King's novel and subsequent film.

Today, New York Comic Con revealed their programming line up for the annual fest, which features three Hulu Original series. Fans can expect to see the world premieres of Marvel's Runaways Season Three, upcoming drama series Reprisal and the highly anticipated Castle RockSeason Two. New York Butoh Institute presents the New York Butoh Institute Festival 19 from Thursday, October 10 through Sunday, October 27, 2019 at Theater for the New City. This year will mark the 60th anniversary of the Japanese performance art form butoh.

Deadline reports that Todd Haynes' latest feature film will get a limited release this fall, right before Thanksgiving. 

The Conspirators will present their World Premiere adaptation, Accidental Death of a Black Motorist, adapted from Dario Fo by Sid Feldman and directed by Wm. Bullion, to be performed at the Athenaeum Theatre, Studio 1, 2936 N. Southport Ave. in Chicago. There will be a preview on Thursday, October 24th, and the opening is Friday October 25th. The show will run Thursdays-Saturdays at 8PM through November 23rd. 

Theater for the New City's award-winning Street Theater Company will open its 43rd annual tour August 3 with 'No Brainer or the Solution to Parasites,' a rip-roaring musical which portrays our road to national madness as a bad trip to Hades. Free performances will tour parks, playgrounds and closed-off streets throughout the five boroughs through September 15. Book, lyrics and direction are by Crystal Field; the musical score is composed and arranged by Joseph Vernon Banks. (Schedule follows at bottom of this document.)

BendFilm announced today that legendary writer and director Ron Shelton will screen his 1988 directorial debut, Bull Durham, and moderate the 'First Features' panel as part of his role as First Features Honoree at the 16th annual BendFilm Festival. Shelton's illustrious career also includes films such as Blaze, White Men Can't Jump, Cobb, Tin Cup, and Hollywood Homicide. Shelton's work spans four decades with more than ten screenwriting and writer/director credits to his name. First Features honorees from past Festivals include John Sayles & Maggie Renzi (2016), Peter Gilbert (2017) and Debra Granik (2018).

Future IDs at Alcatraz, a yearlong project, exhibition, and series of monthly public programs on view in the New Industries Building on Alcatraz Island until October 2019, brings attention to criminal justice reform efforts and second chances. The exhibition encourages the viewer to reevaluate ideas about rehabilitation, reentry, and reintegration, which features ID inspired artwork created by individuals who have a conviction history as they conceive and develop a vision for a future self.
