The NATIONAL NEW PLAY NETWORK (NNPN), the country's alliance of non-profit theaters that champions the development, production, and continued life of new plays, announces its 39th Rolling World Premiere: Peter Sinn Nachtrieb's The Totalitarians will receive three productions through the Network's Continued Life of New Plays Fund in 2014. The Totalitarians will begin its Rolling World Premiere at Southern Rep (New Orleans, LA, January 29 - February 23, 2014), followed by performances at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company (Washington, DC, June 2 - 29, 2014) and Z Space (San Francisco, CA, November 17 - December 14, 2014).

Zam Not Spam Productions, as part of the 17th annual New York International Fringe Festival, presents the NYC premiere production of Laura Zam's MARRIED SEX, directed by Shirley Serotsky. MARRIED SEX will play a special engagement at the Fringe Venue #9 Jimmy's No. 43 (43 East 7th Street, NYC). Performances begin today, Saturday, August 10 (3:45 pm) and continue through Thursday, August 22 (7:00 pm).

The Flea Theater is proud to announce the New York Premiere of Jonathan Caren's THE RECOMMENDATION. This play about friendship, class and where loyalty has its limits will be directed by Flea Resident Director Kel Haney and feature members of The Bats. Previews begin August 23 with opening slated for September 6. Says Producing Director Carol Ostrow, "we are thrilled to open our fall season with a play that speaks to our times and shows off the talents and diversity of our company."

Director Regan Adair returns to STT for the first time since 2011's critical hit, Red Light Winter. In a Forest, Dark and Deep will run in previews today, August 9 - 10, 2013. ALBERT PODELL and THE YORK SHAKESPEARE COMPANY are pleased to announce the world premiere production of Alexander Harrington's The Great Society, directed by Seth Duerr. In the vein of television shows like Roseanne and Showtime's Shameless, SCARCITY 'has strong, messy, vibrant characters...[whose] motivations remain pleasurably inscrutable.' - The New York Sun. With 'an honesty that is pungently compelling' [American Theatre Web], SCARCITY asks its audience, 'How far are you willing to go to survive?'

Opening the season is Lillian Hellman's brilliant 1934 play, The Children's Hour. Bullying, sexual confusion and suicide provide the basis to this dark piece. A show written 79 years ago, yet so poignant to our current state.

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, the latest offering from the BroadHollow Theatre Company, proves a very relatable story. The Pulitzer Prize winning play, by Tennessee Williams, has several themes that the cast wonderfully carried out on the intimate stage of Studio theatre in Lindenhurst. Among said themes are social etiquette, greed, superficiality, mendacity, sexual desire, and death. I think it is safe to say that everyone who sees this show could empathize with at least one of the characters and/or story lines.
