Robert Mann Gallery has announced the upcoming exhibition, Chip Hooper: From the Edge, the artist's final body of work. In this series, Chip Hooper takes us on a visual journey as he contemplated his own existence in the world. Inspired by Mark Rothko's color field paintings, Hooper turned his camera to the horizon line to articulate his deep and spiritual relationship with large expanses of water. Through images of sublime color, Hooper found the ability to clearly understand the ocean's place and role in his life and work. “The ocean is the purest expression of creation. In every moment it is ephemeral, constantly recreating itself. If we look deep enough into it, it has so many answers. For me, it breaths life into me, literally.” - Chip Hooper (Irish Beach, CA, March 29, 2014)

In her latest exhibition and fourth solo show at Robert Mann Gallery, Because for Now We Still Have Poetry, multimedia artist Mary Mattingly assembles stories that strive to transform people's perceptions and reframe predominant ideologies by casting a spotlight on the lands that carry the scars of extraction from mining and chemical cultivation. Mattingly's photographs give a look into systems of mining that support exploitive supply chains, in which the cogs in the machine work independently from one another without realizing the full potential of their destruction. Yet, they also capture the awe of how well oiled and expansive these so called "supply chains" are when put together.

Robert Mann Gallery Announces Murray Fredericks: VANITY
by A.A. Cristi - Jan 5, 2018

Robert Mann Gallery is pleased to announce Vanity, a new body of work from Australian photographer, Murray Fredericks, in the artist's first exhibition in the United States and with the gallery. Murray Fredericks' ongoing relationship with Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre, where the series Vanity is captured, commenced in 2003, and consists of more than twenty journeys to the lake where he photographs for weeks at a time in the vast and boundless landscape. Fredericks is not interested in documenting the literal forms of the landscape, but instead views it as medium in itself that has the potential to convey the emotional response of his experience and results in images that are utterly sublime. In infinite variations of color and clouds, sky and salt, light and landscape, tied together by an unbroken horizon, the viewer can step outside themselves, even just for a moment, to realize the powerful sensation of calm that nature can bestow on the anxieties inherent to the human condition.
