Entering its eighth season in 2016-17, CONTACT!, the Philharmonic's new-music series, will return to National Sawdust in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, for two chamber programs featuring New York-area composers. This season of CONTACT!complements the Philharmonic's 175th anniversary season celebrations, which highlight the Orchestra's rich history of commissioning and premiering important works and salute its hometown of New York City. Esa-Pekka Salonen, who is in the second year of his three-year tenure as the Philharmonic's Marie-Josee Kravis Composer-in-Residence, continues his advisory role on CONTACT!.
Canada's Honens Piano Announces Rules For 2018 Competition

Calgary-based Honens today announced details of its 2018 Piano Competition. Pianists of all nationalities, aged 20 to 30 on August 30, 2018, with the exception of past Honens Laureates and professionally managed artists, may apply starting February 1, 2017. The application deadline is October 31, 2017. The Competition's Quarterfinals take place in Berlin and New York in March 2018. Semifinals and Finals take place in Calgary from August 30 to September 8, 2018.

The Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra presents Romeo and Juliet today, October 8th, 8:00 pm at the Michigan Theater. The performance includes a dramatic musical retelling of the classic story of Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet narrated by Ralph Williams with Brahms Tragic Overture and Haydn's Sinfonia Concertante, Op. 84. The evening will feature solos from special guests Aaron Berofsky on violin, Sarah Cleveland on cello, Christian Green on bassoon, Timothy Michling on oboe, and narration by Ralph Williams.

Hidden from view, the troves of masterpieces waiting within museum archives can only be guessed at, but this fall Robert Mann Gallery is lifting the velvet rope. The gallery is pleased to announce Treasure Rooms, a body of work from Mauro Fiorese, the artist's debut exhibition in the United States. In this ongoing series Fiorese grants a glimpse into the unseen depths of some of Italy's most prominent museums including the Uffizi Gallery and the National Gallery of Modern Art. This exhibition opens on September 8th and will be on view through October 22nd.

PUBLIQuartet will be bringing their "biting force and zesty snap pizzicatos.' (Strad Magazine) to Centenary Stage Company on Sunday, February 14 at 2pm. Named a 2013 CAG New Music/New Places Ensemble, PUBLIQuartet's creative, interactive programming brings a fresh perspective to the classical music scene. Drawing on jazz, world, and electro-acoustic influences, PUBLIQuartet pairs music from the classical repertoire with contemporary works, original compositions, and open-form improvisations that expand the stylistic norms of the string quartet.

Music Director Joana Carneiro and Berkeley Symphony perform the U.S. premiere of Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina's Fachwerk on Thursday, December 3 at 8 pm at Zellerbach Hall in Berkeley, with world-renowned Norwegian bayan pioneer Geir Draugsvoll in his Bay Area debut. Fachwerk was written for bayan (classical accordion), percussion, and strings. The evening opens with two brass works by Italian Renaissance composer Giovanni Gabrieli – Canzon septimi et octavi toni andSonata pian e forte – and concludes with Mussorgsky's much-loved Pictures at an Exhibition.
Aviva Players Open Season with 'Songs, Piano Rags & Chamber Music by Women Composers' Tonight

The Aviva Players will begin its 40th season tonight, October 16 with 'Songs, Piano Rags & Chamber Music by Women Composers, including the Piano Trio by Fanny Mendelssohn,' the first installment of a three-part concert series at Opera America, 330 Seventh Ave. The concert will include piano rags by May Frances Aufderheide, Irene Giblin and Adeline Shepard; songs by Mira J. Spektor, and 'Vocal Duets' and 'The Piano Trio' by Fanny Mendelssohn. The evening is presented in conjunction with Downtown Music Productions.
