Defying economic and political headwinds worldwide, digital out-of-home (DOOH) media operators ground out a 9.3% revenue gain to $8.86 billion in 2013, a solid increase tempered by it being the third straight year of slower growth, according to PQ Media's annual performance benchmark released today. Key first-half indicators point to DOOH growth accelerating to 11.3% in 2014, boosted by a dynamic combination of the global economy gaining momentum, two sporting mega-events, and increased healthcare, political and transit ad spend, says the new Global Digital Out-of-Home Media Forecast 2014-18. Joseph Ruskin Posthumously Receives Equity's Patrick Quinn Award for Distinguished Service to Actors

Veteran union activist Joseph Ruskin has posthumously received the 2014 Patrick Quinn Award for Distinguished Service to Actors presented by the Actors' Equity Foundation. Ruskin, who joined Equity in 1952, served on the Council from 1979 until his death on December 28, 2013 at the age of 89. The award will be presented in Los Angeles to his wife, Barbara Ruskin, at the Equity Council meeting on Tuesday, July 15th. (more...)

An Official Selection of the New York Musical Theatre Festival Next Link Project The Travels, a new play with music by Aaron Riccardi is one of the first shows at the New York Musical Theatre Festival to be granted and extension to to early popular demand. The Travels features music by Kelly Hoppenjans, book and lyrics by Aaron Riccardi, directed by Travis Greisler and choreography by Misha Sheilds. Beginning performances on July 14, the show will run through July 26 at Ford Foundation Studio Theatre at The Pershing Square Signature Center (480 West 42nd Street). The Gypsy Robe began in 1950, when Bill Bradley, in the chorus of GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES, borrowed a dressing gown from Chorus member Florence Baum and sent it to a friend in CALL ME MADAM on opening night Oct 12, 1950 saying it was worn by all the Ziegfeld beauties and would 'bless' the show. A cabbage rose from Ethel Merman's gown was added and the robe was passed along to next Broadway musical on opening night. The tradition evolved so that the robe is now presented to the 'gypsy' who has performed the most Broadway musicals on a chorus contract. Along the way, the robe is decorated, painted, patched, stitched, and signed by everyone in the show, becoming a fanciful patchwork for an entire Broadway season. (more...)

Consumer digital media spending is on pace to grow 11.9% to $963.1 billion in 2013, accounting for the lion's share of the total media economy, although corporate digital media revenues will increase at a faster 13.6% rate to $256.7 billion.
