Ruth Page Center for the Arts Announces Newberry Library as 2014 Recipient of the Distinguished Service Award

Venetia Stifler, Executive and Artistic Director of the Ruth Page Center for the Arts, has announced the Newberry Library as the 2014 recipient of the Ruth Page Center for the Arts Distinguished Service Award. Presented for the first time in 2013, the Distinguished Service Award is given to an individual or organization that demonstrates extraordinary service and leadership in advancing the mission of the Ruth Page Center for the Arts. Newberry President David Spadafora will be presented with this award at the annual Ruth Page Center for the Arts Gala held Saturday, May 10 at the Chicago Yacht Club, 400 E. Monroe St. (more...)

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Returns to Lincoln Center's David H. Koch Theater for a Two-Week Engagement, 6/11-22

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, beloved as one of the world's most popular dance companies,will return to Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts with four different programs for a two-week 15-performance engagement at the David H. Koch Theater June 11 - 22, 2014. Today, Artistic Director Robert Battle announced repertory for the season, highlighted by a world premiere from Robert Moses - a first-time collaboration with the Company - new productions of Hans van Manen's Polish Pieces and David Parsons' signature work Caught, along with the company premiere of Asadata Dafora's groundbreaking 1932 solo Awassa Astrige/Ostrich. Ailey's acclaimed dancers will perform in diverse repertory including encore performances of 2013-14 season premieres and new productions such as Wayne McGregor's Chroma and an "Ailey/Ellington" program, as well as favorites like Alvin Ailey's American masterpiece Revelations. On the occasion of the 104th anniversary of Katherine Dunham's birth, Museum of the Moving Image will present a work-in-progress screening of a new documentary about the pioneering modern dancer and choreographer, by renowned actor and director Terry Carter (Battlestar Galactica, Julia), and followed by a town-hall discussion about Dunham's legacy with Carter and two celebrated Dunham dancers, Julie Belafonte and Dr. Glory Van Scott. The discussion will be moderated by Warrington Hudlin, a Museum trustee and former Dunham drummer. The program today, June 22, 2013, at 3:00 p.m. is part of Changing the Picture, sponsored by Time Warner, Inc., an ongoing series that celebrates and explores the work of film and television artists of color who are bringing diverse voices to the screen. Applications Open for CATCH A RISING STAR 2013 Dance Council of North Texas Scholarships; Deadline Today

Over the past seven years, DCNT has awarded scholarships totaling $206,000 to outstanding dancers from age thirteen through graduate school. There is no residency requirement. DCNT scholarship recipients receive funding, tuition waivers or both to attend prestigious summer intensives and workshops that encompass every dance style. (more...)
