RACE Star James Spader Talk his Affinity for Ruthless Characters with the New York Times

It is not typecasting: James Spader just has an affinity for playing the ruthless characters, according to the New York Times. And, the role of the slick lawyer, Jack Lawson, in David Mamet's RACE, Spader is right up Spader's alley, after having played several sleazy film roles, including Steff in Pretty In Pink and protagonist roles in Sex, Lies and Video Tape, Crash, and The Secretary. His latest endeavor, starring as yet another slime ball on 'Boston Legal', a role which won him three Emmys.

American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.) has announced that the West Coast premiere of David Mamet's presidential farce November has been extended by popular demand through Sunday, November 22, 2009. Directed by Ron Lagomarsino, November will have six additional performances: 8 p.m. performances Wednesday, November 18, through Saturday, November 21, with 2 p.m. matinees on Saturday, November 21, and Sunday, November 22.

Michael Frayn is an English playwright and novelist. He began as a reporter for The Guardian and The Observer after graduating college in 1957. His first novel, The Tin Men, was published in 1965 winning him his first of many accolades. His other award winning novels include Headlong, The Russian Interpreter and Spies. Considered to be Britain's finest translator of Anton Chekhov, he adapted four major plays along with several smaller plays for an evening called The Sneeze in London in 1988. Theatrically, Frayn is the playwright for such well received plays including Noises Off, Benefactors, Wild Honey and Democracy.

Producer Jeffrey Finn announced today that the first-ever Broadway production of OLEANNA, the provocative drama by Pulitzer Prize winner David Mamet, would end its Broadway engagement on Sunday, January 3, 2010. Starring Bill Pullman (in his Broadway return) and Julia Stiles (in her Broadway debut) and directed by Tony Award winner Doug Hughes (Doubt), OLEANNA is a gripping account of a power struggle between a male university professor and one of his female students. Following an engagement last summer at The Mark Taper Forum, the Broadway run began previews on September 29 and opened on October 11 at The Golden Theatre (252 West 45th Street). As of the January date, the cumulative 14-week engagement will have played 15 previews and 97 performances.

The New York Philharmonic will present SONDHEIM: The Birthday Concert on March 15 and Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at 7:30 p.m. This celebration of the 80th birthday of the great Broadway and film composer/lyricist will include his most enduring orchestral music and songs - performed, in some cases, by the stars of the original Broadway cast productions - in addition to rarely-heard material. Joining the celebration will be (in alphabetical order) Michael Cerveris, Victoria Clark, Jason Danieley, Nathan Gunn, George Hearn, Patti LuPone, Marin Mazzie, Audra McDonald, Donna Murphy, Mandy Patinkin, Bernadette Peters, and others to be announced, including surprise guests. Paul Gemignani, Mr. Sondheim's longtime collaborator, will conduct the New York Philharmonic; Lonny Price is the director; and Mr. Price and Matt Cowart are the producers.
Mamet's 'American Buffalo' At Palm Beach Dramaworks

West Palm Beach's only resident professional theatre, Palm Beach Dramaworks, will continue its 10th Anniversary season with 'American Buffalo,' the classic American play by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Mamet, on Friday, February 19th (8PM) at their intimate downtown theatre (322 Banyan Boulevard). Special priced preview performances are slated for February 17th & 18th (8PM) and the production will play through April 4th.
