Violinist Yevgeny Kutik to Give Solo Recital at SubCulture, 3/20

Twenty-eight-year-old Russian-American violinist Yevgeny Kutik, who has been recognized for his old-world sound and technical virtuosity, will perform a solo recital in celebration of his new album, Music from the Suitcase: A Collection of Russian Miniatures, at SubCulture in New York City on Thursday, March 20 at 7:30 p.m. Mr. Kutik's recital will include selections from his album, which features recordings of sheet music found in one of two suitcases the Kutik family brought to the United States when they emigrated from the Soviet Union in 1990. Music from the Suitcase, which will be released by Marquis Classics on April 15, will be available for early sale exclusively for SubCulture audience members following the recital. Tickets are $15 or $25 for a ticket and CD, and are available at the door and from www.subculturenewyork.com.

BWW Reviews: Not Those Kind of Duets - Casebolt and Smith's O(h)

Casebolt and Smith is a duet dance theatre company (made up of Liz Casebolt and my former dance professor, Joel Smith) hailing from sunny Los Angeles. They performed O(h) as part of the 92nd Street Y's Harkness Dance Festival, 'Stripped/Dressed,' curated by fellow choreographer, Doug Varone. A single word (or rather, an exclamation) with befuddling parentheses around the 'h,' O(h) is a work that incites audiences to rethink what they already think they know about dance.

It is a challenging and curious task to describe a person you are inextricably linked to, but have never known. Presented as a work in process February 21-23 at the 92nd Street Y Harkness Dance Festival, Nora Chipaumire's portrait of myself as my father examined the difficult process of tackling that challenge.

Marquis Classics to Release Yevgeny Kutik's New Solo Album, MUSIC FROM THE SUITCASE, 4/15

Twenty-eight-year-old Russian-American violinist Yevgeny Kutik's new solo album, Music from the Suitcase: A Collection of Russian Miniatures,will be released by Marquis Classics on Tuesday, April 15. The album features recordings of sheet music found in one of two suitcases the Kutik family brought to the United States when they emigrated from the Soviet Union in 1990. Along with works by Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Stravinsky, and Tchaikovsky, the album includes rarely recorded works by Andrei Eshpai, Aram Khachaturian, Anton Rubinstein, and Gyorgy Sviridov, along with a song by M. M. Warshawsky transcribed for violin. The album was recorded with pianist Timothy Bozarth, a Beethoven Fellow of the American Pianists Association, and includes liner notes written by Mr. Kutik. The album will be available for preorder on Amazon in early March.

Yefim Bronfman, the New York Philharmonic's 2013-14 Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in-Residence, will be spotlighted in a chamber music concert co-presented with 92nd Street Y. Mr. Bronfman will be joined by Philharmonic Concertmaster Glenn Dicterow; Principal Clarinet Stephen Williamson; Associate Principal, Second Violin Group, Lisa Kim; Associate Principal Viola Rebecca Young; and cellist Maria Kitsopoulos for the program, featuring Schubert's Sonatina in A minor; Bartok's Contrasts for Violin, Clarinet, and Piano; and Brahms's Piano Quintet, Sunday, March 30, 2014, at 3:00 p.m. at 92nd Street Y.

Cypress Quartet to Perform NY Premiere of Tsontakis' STRING QUARTET No. 6 at SubCulture, 4/1

The Cypress String Quartet will give the New York premiere of Grawemeyer Award-winning composer George Tsontakis' String Quartet No. 6 on Tuesday, April 1 at 7:30pm as part of the new series "92Y Concerts at SubCulture," a co-presentation of 92Y and newly opened club SubCulture (downstairs at 45 Bleecker Street). The concert, which is the group's 92Y debut and their only NYC appearance of the season, also includes selections from Dvorak's set of twelve love songs for string quartet, Cypresses, from which the Quartet takes its name, as well as Schubert's seminal String Quartet No. 15 in G Major. The Cypress Quartet's recording of Dvorak's Cypresses was released as part of the quartet's debut album on AVIE in February 2013 (review copies available on request).

MAUDE MAGGART - the acclaimed vocalist hailed as 'singular and arresting' by the New York Times, 'wonderful' by Business Week and 'ingenious' by the Village Voice - will make her debut at the Cafe Carlyle with a special engagement from February 25 to March 1. Her new show 'The Door Opened' will feature numbers by golden-age songwriters Irving Berlin ('I Used To Be Color Blind'), Harry Warren ('Serenade In Blue') and Dorothy Fields ('Blue Again'), in addition to rarely-heard songbook gems including 'Why Am I So Romantic?' (introduced in the legendary Marx Brothers film Animal Crackers) and 'I May Be Wrong, But I Think You're Wonderful' (performed by Maude's grandmother).
