When you think of the song, 'Summertime,' perhaps you hear the elegant Ella Fitzgerald-or the earthy Janis Joplin-singing in your mind. But, while many great covers exist, there's nothing like experiencing the song where 'fish are jumpin' and the cotton is high,' as Gershwin first wrote it: for the powerful voice of an opera singer.
Pascal Dusapin's chamber opera in one act, To Be Sung, will be staged by the Center for Contemporary Opera on Thursday, May 17 and Saturday May 19, 2018, both performances at 8pm, in Brooklyn's Irondale Center (85 South Oxford Street). The libretto was adapted by the composer from Gertrude Stein's short story A Lyrical Opera Made By Two (To Be Sung). Stein conceived her sensual text To Be Sung as a declaration of love to her wife Alice written for their 20th anniversary. The piece is an erotic, exciting and intimate idyll that describes the love between two women.
The Glimmerglass Festival opened its new production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! on Saturday, July 8, in Cooperstown, New York. According to B. A. Nilsson of Words and Music, 'It's a glorious, fully committed, high-kicking three hours of joy.' The production runs through August 22, 2017.

The Glimmerglass Festival, which presents four mainstage productions of opera and musical theater as well as many events every summer, has released the details of its 2017 schedule.
'THE MUMMY,' a new comic opera with music by George Quincy and libretto by Thayer Burch suggested by the 1930's film, will give four staged readings directed by Sue Lawless, on Saturday, December 4 and 11 at 8 PM and Sunday, December 5th and 12th at 3 pm at The Actor's Temple, 339 West 47th Street (between 8th and 9th Avenues.)
