Target Margin Theater's 20th Anniversary production of The Tempest brings the company back to its Shakespearean roots with a rich and strange production performed by members of the troupe that will challenge perceived notions of performing Shakespeare.   For twenty years Target Margin Theater has made hand-crafted magic in plain sight. TMT's production of Titus Andronicus splashed buckets of blood onto the Lower East Side and its mark can still be seen. Now they have dreamed up a Tempest brought to life in an old-fashioned theater, from a rich and strange past they never knew, for a future they want to create.  An aging master magician clumsily tries to control the beautiful fiery and silly spirits on his little island, far from the main stream of his culture. The spell is still gorgeous, but fading. Or is it a brave new beginning?

"This Tempest is my own gentle dream of a beautiful, faded old drama, of the kind of magic and distance that the theater conjures so beautifully," said David Herskovits.  "Prospero reaches back into his past to recreate his own vision of power and beauty."

He went on to add, "We at Target Margin have built a magic box, an old fashioned jewel of a stage, to create our vision: a memory theater of the future. But this is a labor of passion, of love and loss. We aspire to marry Shakespeare's most mature meditation on theater and the passage of time, with undiluted personal feeling."

The creative team includes David Birn (Sets), Carol Bailey (Costumes), Lenore Doxsee (Lights), Kate Marvin (Sound), Thomas Cabaniss (Music Supervision), and David Rosenmeyer (Music Director).  The Production Stage Manager is Joseph Fletcher.

The Tempest plays the following performance schedule:  Mondays, Wednesdays – Saturdays at 8:30 p.m., and Sundays at 4:00 p.m.  Dark on Tuesdays.    Ticket are priced at $25 for all performances, and may be purchased at www.here.org,  or by calling TheaterMania at (212) 352-3101.  The Box Office at HERE is open after 5:00pm on evening performance days only and 2 hours prior on matinee performance days.

This production is being presented through HEREstay, HERE's curated rental program, which provides artists with subsidized space and equipment, as well as technical and administrative support.

Target Margin Theater for twenty years has been at the forefront of New York's alternative theater scene and has been praised for its bold and sometimes wild interpretations of classic dramas and lesser-known works.  Target Margin Theater has presented ambitious re-thinkings of plays by Shakespeare, Chekov, Brecht, Gertrude Stein, and Beaumarchais, among others. The company's production of Mamba's Daughters received the OBIE Award and was a sensation of the 1999 Spoleto Festival, and its recent epic production of Goethe's Faust received critical acclaim.
