Maxwell and Other B'way Stars Form Cast of 'Substitution'

 The Playwrights Realm, Off-Broadway's newest theater company, will present the World Premiere of Anton Dudley's Substitution at SoHo Playhouse. The play was written specifically for Tony Award nominee Jan Maxwell, who stars in the production, directed by Katherine Kovner. Produced on an Off-Broadway contract, this limited engagement begins previews April 26 with opening night slated for May 4.

In Substitution, Calvin's Mom is coping with the death of her teenage son as best as she can. When a substitute teacher challenges everything she thinks she knows about Calvin, their volatile bond creates a complex unfolding of revelations. Ultimately, she discovers that the choices we make about how we live and how we love can bring about endless surprises.

Jan Maxwell has been seen on Broadway in Coram Boy (Tony Award & Drama Desk award nominee), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (Drama Desk Award & Tony Award nominee), Sixteen Wounded (Drama Desk award nominee), Match, Dinner Party, The Sound of Music, and Doll's House. Select Off-Broadway credits include Entertaining Mr. Sloane (Roundabout); My Old Lady (Lortel award winner; Drama Desk award nominee); House and Garden (Manhattan Theater Club).

The production also stars Kieran Campion (Pygmalion at Roundabout and Journeys End on Broadway), Brandon Espinoza (Scarcity at AtlanticTheater) and Shana Dowdeswell (The Diary of Anne Frank at Papermill Playhouse) with set by Tom Gleeson (Richard II at Classic Stage Company), Theresa Squire (Broadway's Lieutenant of Inishmore, Orson's Shadow, Beebo Brinker Chronicles), lighting by Jeff Croiter (Kiki and Herb: Alive on Broadway, Miss Witherspoon at Playwrights Horizons) and sound by Jill BC DuBoff (Beebo Brinker Chronicles, Iphigenia 2.0)

Anton Dudley's Off-Broadway productions include Getting Home (Second Stage) and Slag Heap (Cherry Lane). Other NYC productions include Circumvention (Keen Company), Honor and the River (SPF'04 featuring an Maxwell, New York Stage & Film), Davy & Stu (Ensemble Studio Theatre), The Lake's End (Adirondack Theatre Festival), BOB (New York Stage & Film, directed by Leigh Silverman), and edWARd2 (FringeNYC). He is the recipient of NYU's Goldberg Award for Best Play and the John Golden Prize in Playwriting.

The Playwrights Realm is a new Off-Broadway theater company dedicated to developing and producing theater with artists who share our belief that the playwright's vision is central to great theater. Led by Co-Artistic Directors John Dias and Katherine Kovner, The Realm  will produce both contemporary playwrights and great dramatic literature from the past -- often side by side.

Substitution runs April 26 - May 17, Tuesday - Friday at 7:30pm, Saturday at 3:00pm & 7:30pm, and Sunday at 3:00pm.
