The Public Theater (Artistic Director Oskar Eustis, Interim Executive Director Joey Parnes) is accepting applications for the 2013 Emerging Writers Group through today, August 31, 2011. As part of The Public Theater's "The Public Goes Green Initiative", applications for the fourth cycle of the Emerging Writers Group will be accepted via email for the first time, as well as by mail and delivery as in previous years. Through an open application process, The Public Theater will select 10 up-and-coming playwrights to join the Emerging Writers Group from January 2012 through December 2013.

This year also marks the first time that applicants will apply for the newly expanded two-year cycle. The Emerging Writers Group is an ongoing two-year program that targets playwrights at the earliest stages of their careers and nurtures their artistic growth by providing necessary resources and support. Time Warner is the founding sponsor of The Public Writers Initiative.
Through the Emerging Writers Group, The Public hopes to create an artistic home for a diverse and exceptionally talented group of up-and-coming playwrights. Developed in collaboration with Time Warner's Office of Corporate Responsibility, the Emerging Writers Group is one element of The Public Writers Initiative, a long-term program that provides key support and resources for writers at every stage of their careers.

"We are so excited to open our submissions for the next class of the Emerging Writers Group," said Public Theater Associate Artistic Director Mandy Hackett. "This program brings together a group of fiercely talented writers at the earliest stages in their careers, and we are looking forward to welcoming the next group into The Public Theater family."

"At Time Warner, we believe that the development of work that reflects the voices and experiences of all communities is not only critical to our success as a company, but inextricably tied to the health and vibrancy of our society," said Lisa Garcia Quiroz, Time Warner Inc.'s Senior Vice President of Corporate Responsibility. "We are proud to once again partner with The Public on such an important program that truly fosters the next generation of storytellers."
Each emerging writer receives a two-year fellowship at The Public which includes a $6,000 stipend; participation in a bi-weekly writers group led by Literary Manager Liz Frankel and The Public's Literary Department; master classes with established playwrights; career development advice and artistic support from acclaimed writers and Public artistic staff; complimentary tickets to Public shows and supplemental stipends for productions at other theaters; and a reading of their work in the Emerging Writers Group Evening of Excerpts and Spotlight Series.
