John Goodlin to Direct ARMS AND THE MAN at The Sawyer Center Theater, 6/5-14

For its tenth season, the Northern New England Repertory Theatre Company (NNE Rep) will present George Bernard Shaw's romantic comedy Arms and the Man*. The Shaw classic will run for seven performances, June 5 through June 14, in the Sawyer Center Theater at Colby-Sawyer College in New London.

John Goodlin, who played Judge Brack in last season's production of Hedda Gabler, and Chris in NNE Rep's 2012 production of Anna Christie, returns to the role of Director for the 2014 season. Ten years ago, Goodlin launched the New London-based classical theatre company with a production of Twelfth Night. Since the inaugural season, he has directed A Midsummer Night's Dream, Much Ado About Nothing, The Comedy of Errors and Othello for the company.

"Imagination is the beginning of creation. We imagine what we desire, we will what we imagine, and at last we create what we will," wrote George Bernard Shaw. Goodlin had the imagination, desire, and will to bring a classical theatre company to life in the New London area. When asked to share his motivation for doing so, he replies, "I ask the question: Why support classical theatre? As an actor and director, my foremost purpose is to share a story. There are wonderful and inspiring stories that have been created by the masterful playwrights of classic drama. The same holds true of film, the opera, and the ballet. Wonderful stories are embodied in great symphonies, a piece of sculpture, a painting, a ceramic vase, a wood carving, and, indeed, in all of the Fine Arts. Of course, great stories abound in all of classic literature and are shared with storytelling aplomb by professors of the Humanities everywhere. Just as these stories deserve their hearing in our theatres, our galleries, and classrooms, the stories of the classic theatre surely deserve their hearing on the stages of our community and region as we learn more about our capacities and worth as human beings."

Evening performances of Arms and the Man begin at 7:30 PM on June 5, 6, 7, & 12, 13, 14, with a matinee on June 8 starting at 2:00 PM. Tickets are $28, with student and group rates available.
