With the a small solemn mass Rossini wrote one of the most popular works from the choral literature. Perhaps the most beautiful cd recording was made by the Dutch Chamber Choir. This promises to be a great concert. Also the pianists Ardra Jordans and Leo van Doeselaar are ideal for Rossini. They make music with ' disarming lightness, sense of detail, finesse and an enchanting richness of timbres (NRC). '

Rossini wrote the ' small serious wrong ' at the end of his career. His composition he labelled as a ' sin of my old age. ' That label, he also stuck on the piano pieces, and other vocal works which he then composed. For his contemporaries were those ' old-age ' sins a big surprise. Because after his final opera Guillaume Tell Rossini had composed something hardly more over 20 years.

Rossini gave his mass for the joke a misleading title. With a duration of approximately ninety minutes is the work difficult ' small '. The show is not serious, but airy.
