With spring finally at the horizon in the Netherlands, so is the end of the 2012-2013 season. Next season will be brand-marked by the financial crisis raging in Europe. Fewer productions, smaller casts. What's to expect after the summer? In short: movies-turned-musicals and biography shows. BroadwayWorld comments on the most prominent (confirmed) titles.

Still going strong:

- SOLDAAT VAN ORANJE (Katwijk aan Zee, opened October 2010):
Epic WWII spectacle about Dutch students joining the resistance against the German occupation, featuring a revolving auditorium and spectacular sets. It has been playing for sold-out houses since its premiere in October 2010. Critics raved, audiences flocked. Despite its less-than-mediocre score and lyrics (by Tom Harriman and Pamela Phillips Oland), SOLDAAT continues to be the one must-see show in the Netherlands.

- SISTER ACT (Scheveningen, opened March 2013):
Whoopi Goldberg travels around the world to open (not quite identical) musical productions of her 1992 movie, and endorsed the Dutch one, too. Joop Van Den Ende championed and produces this show worldwide since 2009, so one could say it has finally come home.

- HIJ GELOOFT IN MIJ (Amsterdam, opened November 2012):
When Dutch folk singer Andre Hazes (favorite breakfast: beer) died, his memorial service was held in a packed football stadium. Author and comedian Kees Prins, who once stated he thoroughly hated the musical theatre genre, created this musical about Hazes' life.

Expected:

- FLASHDANCE (tour, opens September 2013):
The next installment in the string of dance-heavy feel-good musicals that also included Fame and Footloose, as produced by Albert Verlinde. Idols-laureate Jim Bakkum ("I'm quitting musical theatre to focus on my solo career") plays the male lead.

- SONNEVELD (tour, opens Fall 2013):
Wim Sonneveld is a monument of Dutch cabaret of the sixties and seventies. Various shows and musical revues have already celebrated his career, but apparently there's room for one more. Producer Albert Verlinde aims to repeat the success of his recent show about singer Ramses Shaffy.

- KLEINE BLONDE DOOD (tour, opens Winter 2013):
The sad story about the death of a gay man's son was made famous in a 1985 movie starring Antonie Kamerling, who recently and tragically passed away. Not the stuff of a feel-good show. Composer Ad Van Dijk (CYRANO on Broadway) makes his comeback in this show.

- JERSEY BOYS (Utrecht, opens September 2013):
The Four Seasons' music has international appeal, but will the Jersey characters and atmosphere come to life when played by Dutch youngsters? Songs remain in English, dialogues will be in Dutch.

- LOVE STORY (tour, opens Fall/Winter 2013):
A surprising choice by Stage Entertainment. Its cancellation was greeted with "I told you so"; the subsequent announcement that the cancellation got cancelled was not. Celinde Schoenmaker (current Fantine in West End LES MISERABLES) will play the lead.
