2013 Detroit Design Festival Announces 70 Events, 9/17-22

Detroit's annual citywide celebration of design, the Detroit Design Festival, launches Sept. 17 with a kick-off party that will set the stage for more than 70 events set to take place Sept. 18-22, 2013.
Home to the highest concentrations and quantities of commercial and industrial designers of all U.S. metropolitan regions, the third-annual Detroit Design Festival, presented by Detroit Creative Corridor Center, spans all design disciplines and brings together commerce, culture, education, and entertainment with a full, varied program of exhibitions, openings, installations, shows, talks, and open studios. Taking place at venues along Detroit's Creative Corridor, from Downtown Detroit to New Center, in Eastern Market and in more than 13 neighborhoods throughout Detroit, the Detroit Design Festival has designated tracks, which will help festivalgoers choose among the plethora of events to attend. Design Happenings are labeled using the following tracks: • Community: Programming that features innovative design applications, installations or interventions that improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods.• Consumer: Programming that provides opportunities for designers to launch new products or services; clients and consumers identify new vendors, source creative projects and purchase design forward products.
• Practitioner: Programming that provides the design industries with professional development and networking opportunities.
• Enthusiast: Programming featuring rare glimpses into the people and places that inspire Detroit's design community.
• Exploration: Exploratory programming that educates a broad community about the role design plays in developing processes and products that improve our quality of life.
• Youth: Programming that inspires younger generations to consider design and creative professions.

Detroit Design Festival Kickoff Party

DDF's official kickoff party will include the Detroit Design Expo, a showroom component of the DDF that will spotlight the work of Detroit's creative community. Featuring studio displays by local design associations, professionals and business ventures in Detroit Creative Corridor Center's (DC3) network, the expo will provide marketing and networking opportunities for participants and demonstrate the DC3's significant impact in growing Detroit's design industry.

The Toyota Lecture Series - Lorraine Wild

Lorraine Wild is a graphic designer, proprietress of Green Dragon Office, published writer, art historian, and an art instructor of design. This self-guided evening tour provides a once-a-year opportunity for guests to explore more than 30 creative venues. Eastern Market is often recognized as the food hub of Detroit, bustling with Saturday morning shoppers. After dark a different hustle takes over the neighborhood, a creative movement hidden in lofts, studios and galleries living in the market. The night tour will open the doors to studios, galleries, artists' residencies, hacker spaces, shops and letterpress studios. The evening will give guests a chance to explore the market often not experienced. A free shuttle will be provided to take patrons between centralized locations in the Market. The Visual Art of John Cage

For the first time in Detroit, Center Galleries presents an exhibition of drawings, watercolors and prints by the legendary 20th century avant-garde composer and writer John Cage (1912 - 1992). Cups With A Purpose: The Red Thread of Fate Installation

An invisible red thread connects those destined to meet, regardless of time, place, or circumstances. During the month of September, patrons can donate a dollar to share their individual thoughts, reflections, and inspiration of design by writing on a recycled cup. Color Names Research Study

DC3 extends business acceleration services to Detroit's creative community in partnership with TechTown and the region's business incubators; helps existing businesses realize the potential of concentrating and growing operations in Detroit's Creative Corridor through leading business attraction specific to the needs of the creative and design sectors; and develops unique programming that strengthen networks between creative practitioners in Southeast Michigan while reinforcing their essential role as a social and economic change agents. DC3 is a partnership between Business Leaders for Michigan and the College for Creative Studies. It receives funding from the U.S. Small Business Administration, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the New Economy Initiative for Southeast Michigan, The Kresge Foundation, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Surdna Foundation. It also generates a portion of its revenue through fee based consulting work.
