The Des Moines Community Playhouse presents the family holiday classic, "The Wizard of Oz," tonight, Dec. 7-30. Tickets may be purchased online at dmplayhouse.com, by phone at 515-277-6261, and at The Playhouse ticket office, 831 42nd St.

Dorothy Gale of Kansas dreams of what lies over the rainbow. One day a twister hits her farm and carries her over the rainbow to another world: a world full of good and bad witches and Munchkins. Dorothy finds faithful friends in a Scarecrow, Tinman, and Lion, and the group leads her through an adventure to find the great Wizard of Oz.

"The Wizard of Oz," based on the novel "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" by L. Frank Baum, is best known from the 1939 film version, starring Judy Garland. This enchanting musical version of the beloved movie is the perfect holiday gift for families.

The Playhouse cast of 25 features Nicole Miller as Dorothy, Elisabeth Ballstadt as the Wicked Witch of the West, Casey Coppess as the Scarecrow, Douglas Cochrane as the Tinman, Peter Dean as the Cowardly Lion, and Maxwell Schaeffer as the Wizard. The show is directed by Kathy Pingel, with music direction by Steve Woodin and choreography by Alison Shafer.

The Playhouse is Iowa's oldest and largest producing theatre. Located at the 42nd Street exit of I-235, the theatre has presented a full season of shows since 1919 and also offers a wide variety of educational experiences including classes for ages 4 to adult, theatre trips to New York, and volunteer opportunities onstage and backstage.
