Undermain Theatre Presents GALILEO

Undermain Theatre presents GALILEO, Bertolt Brecht's masterpiece, which he translated in English in collaboration with Charles Laughton. GALILEO will be produced at Undermain's home in Deep Ellum - 3200 Main St. with company member Bruce DuBose in the title role. DuBose is a recipient of Best Actor awards from the Dallas Critics Forum, D Magazine and the Dallas Observer. Directed by Undermain's Artistic Director, Katherine Owens, opening night will be Saturday, February 11th with a curtain time of 7:30 pm. Preview performances will be on February 8th, 9th, and 10th at 7:30 pm. All preview performances are only $15. All evening show times are 7:30 pm with two Sunday matinee performances at 2:00 pm on February 19th and March 5th. The production will run through March 5th.

ABOUT THE PLAY:
The setting is the dawn of the age of reason in the early 17th century when Galileo was teaching young students the incredible account of how the earth moves around the sun, rather than the other way around. His heretical announcement, that both the moon and Jupiter only reflect the sun's light, is brought to the attention of the church and Galileo is summoned to the Vatican. His friends abandon him and his appeal to the Pope is intercepted by the inquisitor. Galileo recants, but even while imprisoned continues his writings surreptitiously. Throughout his life Galileo is pitted against an institution that claims the truth as its own commodity and threatens torture and death to those who would offer an opposing vision.

After emigrating to the United States from Hitler's Germany, Brecht translated and re-worked the first version of his play in collaboration with the actor Charles Laughton. The result of their efforts was the second 'American version' of the play, which to this day remains the most widely-staged version in the English-speaking world. Undermain will offer a rare opportunity to see this masterwork, which was last produced in North Texas in 1984, in its unique and intimate performance venue.

ABOUT BRUCE DUBOSE:
Bruce is a founding member of Undermain Theatre with over 30 years of acting credits in Undermain productions, including James Tyrone in Long Day's Journey Into Night, The Poet in An Illiad, Lindquist in Easter, and Earl in Neil Young's Greendale. A winner of multiple best actor awards from Dallas Critics Forum, D Magazine and the Dallas Observer, he has appeared in numerous indie films such as Spring Eddy, Dusk, I am Gilgamesh and Julia Dyer's Late Bloomers and in episodic television such as Prison Break, Walker Texas Ranger, and Friday Night Lights. As a voice-actor Bruce appears on the interactive game Borderlands as Marcus Kincaid, and in other games like Gears of War, The Walking Dead and in Smite as the Norse god Thor. He has also narrated Emmy Award winning documentaries for PBS such as The US-Mexican War, The Marines and Justice For My People. In addition to acting, Bruce is an accomplished musician and has composed music and designed sound for countless Undermain productions, most recently so go the ghosts of méxico, part one, Jonah and The Testament of Mary.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956), playwright, poet and director, was born in Augsburg, Germany in February 1898. He established himself as a playwright during the 1920's and early 1930's with plays such as Baal, Man is Man, The Threepenny Opera, and The Mother. In 1933, as Hitler came to power in Germany, Mr. Brecht fled to Scandinavia before eventually settling in the USA where he remained until 1947. During the war years, he wrote many of his best known plays, including The Life of Galileo, The Caucasian Chalk Circle, Mother Courage and Her Children, and The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui. He returned to Europe in 1947 and shortly after his arrival formed the Berliner Ensemble. He died in Berlin on August 14th, 1956 but remains a hugely influential theatre practitioner.

This production is directed by Artistic Director *Katherine Owens, with Scenic and Lighting Design by *John Arnone, Costume Design by Amanda Capshaw, Sound Design by Paul Semrad, and Properties Design by Linda Noland.
