Cleveland Public Theatre (CPT) is proud to announce the regional premiere of Mr. Burns, A Post-Electric Play, the Off-Broadway sensation (2014 Drama League Award nominee) written by Anne Washburn, with score by Michael Friedman (Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson) and lyrics by Anne Washburn. CPT's production is directed by Matthew Wright, with Music Direction by Brad Wyner (Titus: A Grand and Gory Rock Musical) and Choreography by Holly Handman.

About Mr. Burns, A Post-Electric Play

Called "downright brilliant" by the New York Times' Ben Brantley, Mr. Burns, A Post-Electric Play begins in the aftermath of an unspecified apocalyptic event, where a group of survivors has gathered around a campfire, staving off the gloom by recounting an episode of The Simpsons cartoon television show. In the second act (7 years later), the same group of survivors has banded together as a touring theatrical troupe-specializing in performing television episodes (with commercials) for the public-exchanging remembered culture for currency in a post-electric world. The final act, a further 75 years into the future, is staged as a Gilbert and Sullivan-styled musical pageant-the original episode refashioned and evolved over the decades into sacred mythos. Reviewing for Vulture, critic Scott Brown described the Mr. Burns, A Post-Electric Play Act III musical number as "equal parts Brecht and Bart, Homer and the other Homer".
