Maxims Announces Cabaret and High Tea Events Coming This Summer

During July, August and September, the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events in partnership with the Chicago Office of Tourism and Culture will present three cabaret events and three afternoons of high tea accompanied by unique entertainment at Maxim's: The Nancy Goldberg International Center at 24 E. Goethe Street.

The Play On Cabaret series presents some of Chicago's finest musical talent, including singers of the Great American Songbook and a wide variety of blues, jazz and instrumental interpretations.

Tea at 3 presents a glamorous afternoon of high tea and uncommon entertainment every month. Each event begins with a tea tasting provided by TeaGschwendner. The selections include a traditional black tea and a caffeine-free or herbal tea. Tea sandwiches, cookies, cheese and fruit also are served, before the entertainment.

Prolific and internationally renowned singer, composer, teacher and producer Tecora Rogers performs jazz standards and contemporary jazz in front of an A-list band. Born and raised in Chicago, Tecora combines the complexity of jazz with the electricity of gospel to create her own brand of "power jazz". She has wowed audiences throughout the United States, Europe and Russia.

Johnny Gabor performed at Maxim's in its heyday when Nancy Goldberg was owner. While at Maxim's, Gabor played for celebrities such as Diana Ross and The Supremes, Gregory Peck, Liza Minnelli, Ann Margret, Anthony Quinn, Phyllis Diller and George Hamilton, to name just a few. Johnny Gabor and his trio, with vocalist Connie Marshall, will be playing popular selections of that time such as "Umbrella of Cherbourg", "I Will Wait for You", "Watch What Happens", "Man of La Mancha", "Impossible Dream", and many more.

Cabaret icon and acclaimed vocalist Joan Curto will formally kick off what will be a number of musical tributes across the nation celebrating the Tony and Grammy Award winning composer Jerry Herman's 80th birthday. With the landmark musicals Hello Dolly!, Mame and La Cage aux Folles, Herman is only one of three composer-lyricists to have three musicals that ran for more than 1,500 consecutive performances on Broadway. Herman's songs provide the perfect showcase for Curto's classic, sultry styling and emotional versatility. She will be performing favorites and less familiar songs from the Herman songbook, while another Chicago favorite, Beckie Menzie, provides musical direction.
