MARIZA

Monday, October 26 at 7:00PM & 9:00PM

$40-150

Mariza is a Fado singer and she will never let go of, never forget, this music she heard from a young age. Fado can be many things, and, so, it is always in Mariza's voice. It's there in her voice, in the soul, in the passion she puts in every single track on this record, whether she is singing new material written by her producer Javier Limón, or covering classics by the legendary Amália Rodrigues or the mythical Tango singer Carlos Gardel. Mariza's remarkable voice builds a bridge between many different kinds of music under the all-encompassing umbrella of Fado.

Fourteen years ago, Mariza released her debut album Fado em Mim. Few imagined the journey she was then beginning would take her so far away from home for so long - even after that record became a runaway success. The journey encompassed all that followed - four other albums (Fado Curvo, Transparente, Terra e Fado Tradicional), three live recordings (Live in London, Concerto em Lisboa e Terra em Concerto), a triumphant greatest hits album, countless international tours and concerts in some of the most prestigious venues around the world, numerous global awards and decorations.

FIRTH, FLEISHER & FLEISHER

Wednesday, October 28 at 9:30PM

$25

Firth, Fleisher and Fleisher. No, it's not a law firm devoted to collecting musical damages. It's a one-night-only celebration of three unlikely friends who want very much to build musical bridges -- and to work out some minor oedipal issues. Julian Fleisher eschews the brass, sass and swagger of his Rather Big Band in favor of a deep dive into some unexpected material with just the help of the two best pianists he knows: the increasingly hard-to-book young phenom Tedd Firth and his increasingly easy-to-book dad, legendary concert pianist Leon Fleisher. Like a Venn diagram with a warm, chewy center, this gig will likely be one-of-a-kind.

Nicole Henry

Wednesday, October 28 at 7:30PM

$25 - $30

Since her debut in 2004, Nicole Henry has established herself as one of the jazz world's most acclaimed vocalists, possessing a potent combination of dynamic vocal abilities, impeccable phrasing and powerful emotional resonance. Her passionate, soulful voice and heart-felt charisma has earned her a 2013 Soul Train Award for "Best Traditional Jazz Performance," three Top-10 U.S. Billboard and HMV Japan jazz albums. Heralded by The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The Japan Times, El Pais, Jazz Times, Essence and more, Ms. Henry tells real stories through repertoire from the American Songbook, classic and contemporary jazz, contemporary standards, blues and originals.

Jamie Leonhart'S ESTUARY: AN ARTIST/MOTHER STORY

Sunday - Tuesday, November 1-3 at 7:00PM

$15

Estuary: an artist/mother story, is a musical exploration of the challenges and unanticipated realities of being an artist and a new parent, made in collaboration with critically acclaimed director Joanna Settle. The nascence of the piece began soon after Jamie Leonhart's son was born. The singer navigates the changes in her artistic work, her relationship with her husband and the new insane world of everything "baby" with equal parts humor and heartache. Leonhart is unflinching in her candor as she sings about conflict, loneliness and the anger that accompany the mother/artist collision. Estuary was created as a part of the New York Voices commission. Joe's Pub New York Voices series presents new works from critically-acclaimed performers commissioned by Joe's Pub and supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Ben Wexler: THE WASHINGTON SQUARE PARK PROJECT

Sunday, November 1 at 9:30PM

$15

When Lee Wexler lived in Greenwich Village in the mid-1980s, he set out to capture the gritty, beloved gathering place that was Washington Square Park through portrait photography and interviews. The park has since lost much of its spirit, and composer Ben Wexler is now opening the airtight container of his father's work with an aim to revive the park as it was. From his bench at the piano, the younger Wexler spins the recorded testimony of the park regulars into song: from the folk musicians to the crossdressers, the drug users to the elderly women, all under the same arch.

Named for Public Theater founder Joe Papp, Joe's Pub at The Public opened in 1998 and plays a vital role in The Public's mission of supporting young artists while providing established artists with an intimate space to perform and develop new work. Joe's Pub consistently presents the best in live music and performance nightly, continuing its commitment to diversity, production values, community and artistic freedom. The organization also offers unique opportunities like New York Voices, an artist commissioning program that provides musicians the resources and tools needed to develop original theater works. Commissioned artists have included Ethan Lipton, Toshi Reagon, Bridget Everett, Allen Toussaint and more. In 2011, the Pub received a top-to-bottom renovation, leading to improved sightlines, expanded seating capacity and a new menu from acclaimed Chef Andrew Carmellini. With its intimate atmosphere and superior acoustics, Joe's Pub presents talent from all over the world as part of The Public's programming downtown at its Astor Place home, hosting approximately 800 shows and serving over 100,000 audience members annually.

The Public Theater, under the leadership of Oskar Eustis and Executive Director Patrick Willingham, is the only theater in New York that produces Shakespeare, the classics, musicals, contemporary and experimental pieces in equal measure. Celebrating his 10th anniversary season at The Public, Eustis has created new community-based initiatives designed to engage audiences like Public Lab, Public Studio, Public Forum, Public Works, and a remount of the Mobile Shakespeare Unit. The Public continues the work of its visionary founder, Joe Papp, by acting as an advocate for the theater as an essential cultural force, and leading and framing dialogue on some of the most important issues of our day. Creating theater for one of the largest and most diverse audience bases in New York City for nearly 60 years, today the Company engages audiences in a variety of venues-including its landmark downtown home at Astor Place, which houses five theaters and Joe's Pub; the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, home to its beloved, Free Shakespeare in the Park; and the Mobile Unit, which tours Shakespearean productions for underserved audiences throughout New York City's five boroughs. The Public's wide range of programming includes free Shakespeare in the Park, the bedrock of the Company's dedication to making theater accessible to all; Public Works, a new initiative that is designed to cultivate new connections and new models of engagement with artists, audiences and the community each year; new and experimental stagings at The Public at Astor Place, including Public Lab; and a range of artist and audience development initiatives including its Public Forum series, which brings together theater artists and professionals from a variety of disciplines for discussions that shed light on social issues explored in Public productions. The Public Theater is located on property owned by the City of New York and receives annual support from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs; and in October 2012 the landmark building downtown at Astor Place was revitalized to physically manifest the Company's core mission of sparking new dialogues and increasing accessibility for artists and audiences, by dramatically opening up the building to the street and community, and transforming the lobby into a public piazza for artists, students, and audiences. Key elements of the revitalization included an expanded and refurbished lobby; the addition of a mezzanine level with a new restaurant lounge, The Library, designed by the Rockwell Group. The Public Theater is currently represented on Broadway by the Tony Award-winning Fun Home and Lin-Manuel Miranda's acclaimed American musical Hamilton. The Public has received 47 Tony Awards, 167 Obie Awards, 52 Drama Desk Awards, 48 Lortel Awards, 31 Outer Critics Circle Awards, 13 New York Drama Critics Awards, and four Pulitzer Prizes.
