Cornelius Bates is Back for His Final Show in His Debut Year in Cabaret! "My Brazilian Romance: A Tribute to the Music from Brazil" at the Metropolitan Room at Gotham

Sunday, December 19 at 9:30pm

"There are no words to describe how scrumptious to see a newcomer in the arena of vocal artistry take on so ambitious a project as making hot Brazilian chestnuts into firecrackers that sizzle, but Cornelius Bates has done exactly that with his show, which returns to Met Room, 34 West 22nd Street between 5th and 6th Avenues, on Sunday the 19th at 9:30...He is as commanding and masterful in Portuguese as in English, whether with 'Fotografia' by Jobim and Gilbert or Horace Silver's 'Song for my Father,' and his musicians couldn't be more top-notch...This show is, above all else, a brilliant escape from The Common-day woes of life and should be savored as such." - Andrew Martin, WPAT 930 AM Radio

"...the results are smashing. [Songs] range from infectious to downright irresistible...Bates does an adorable little jig...spirit-lifting performance...he knows how to take a thoroughly familiar song and make it fresh." - Roy Sander (read the entire review at BistroAwards.com)

"The outstanding solo debut of Cornelius Bates...was unforgettable...The variety of his talents was extraordinarily impressive, and they only increased before his act was over...Bates has a great voice for the music of romance." - Gloria Taplin (read the entire review at CabaretScenes.org)

Cornelius Bates is a versatile performer in music, stage, and television. On stage he has performed in everything from musicals to the works of Shakespeare. He made his television debut as Chuck Berry in the miniseries "Shake, Rattle and Roll." He appeared as the guest vocalist with the renowned dance company Step Afrika at the Kennedy Center. He has been a guest in the "Late Night Groove" series at the Blue Note and with the popular Brazilian band The Nanny Assis Group at S.O.B.'s. As a finalist in the Metropolitan Room 2009 MetroStar Talent Challenge, Cornelius offered rich interpretations of the Brazilian song book.

Cornelius Bates made his solo debut at the Metropolitan Room back in January offering the lush phrasings of bossa nova, the sexy sounds of samba, and the hypnotic melodies of Brazilian pop. All in all, it's a tribute to the music of Brazil entitled "My Brazilian Romance."

The new show is under the musical direction of Marcos Vigio, the Rio de Janeiro guitarist now based in New York City, with percussionists Nanny Assis and Robert Di Pietro. Mike Rodriguez plays trumpet.

The cover charge is $15 with a two beverage minimum. The cover is $12 for tickets purchased in advance from the Metropolitan web site, at www.metropolitanroom.com.
