JUST ADDED
JAVIER COLON

Tuesday, January 4 at 7:30 PM; $12 in advance / $15 at the door

With the release of his self-titled debut in 2003, newcomer Javier Colon has proved himself a welcome addition to the canon of intriguing R&B singers. Indeed, not since Babyface has there been an artist who could write and sing beautifully crafted songs as well as throw down with an acoustic guitar and do it all with such pureness. "I like to be versatile with the styles of music I do but I try to keep it true to the genre while stretching it at the same time. A lot of record companies don't allow an artist to have that kind of creative freedom, so I consider myself one of the lucky ones."

On Javier's latest opus, the stunning Left of Center, the Connecticut native brings even more talent to the table. Embracing diverse musical palettes that include splashes of R&B, hip-hop, rock, pop balladry and straight-up soul, Left of Center is an engaging project that should even have naysayers praising Javier's name. "Besides me being left handed," he laughs, "the title Left of Center is just my way of saying to the listeners, 'This album has a slightly different feel than what you might find on some other traditional R&B albums.'"

Bettye Lavette
Saturday, January 8 at 9:30 PM; $35 in advance / $40 at the door
Who is Bettye Lavette you ask? The simple answer is Ms. LaVette is one of the greatest soul singers in American music history, possessed of an incredibly expressive voice that one moment will exude a formidable level of strength and intensity and the next will appear vulnerable, reflective, reeking of heartbreak. Unfortunately, it says much about the vagaries of the popular music industry that, although LaVette has been recording for over four decades, up until recent years she has remained criminally unknown.
For her new CD "The Scene Of The Crime", Bettye Lavette and Drive-By Truckers collaborate on this one-of-a-kind record filled with mini-dramas about life, love and survival. A blistering mix of anguished soul & greasy rock & roll, laced with the swampy guitars, Spooner Oldham's slippery Wurlitzer piano and Bettye's razor sharp voice in the forefront.
Her first sold-out Joe's Pub show won rave reviews from the New York Times, who praised her "pure, magnificent soul: passion carried by an eloquent voice and exquisite timing...Her voice was wounded and tough, and she deployed it shrewdly, starting with quiet, coiled phrases, rising to gritty moans and lashing out in quick staccato outbursts."

Tonight she will perform a stripped down set with her pianist.

COLIN DEAN

Wednesday, January 12 at 9:30 PM; $14

Bassist and composer Colin Dean recently released his debut CD, entitled Shiwasu, to critical acclaim. His music is deeply rooted in the jazz tradition while also drawing inspiration from a wide variety of styles such as world music and hip hop. This event will feature Colin Dean on bass, Rachel Z on piano, Colin Stranahan on drums, Sean Nowell on tenor and soprano saxophones, with special guest hip hop MC's Eternia and Hasan Salaam.

"Colin Dean is ready for prime-time. His writing, his playing, his leadership, all display a maturity far beyond his years. I've watched him develop and hone his skills with my own eyes, heard it with my own ears. Colin is ready for prime-time." - Buster Williams

"Depth of thought in the compositions, lyricism, and sensitivity in the playing with a touch of world rhythms are the hallmarks of this recording. To find these qualities in someone as young as Colin is indeed a joy to behold." - Bobby Sanabria

"This cat grew up in music and you can tell how it is infused in his fibers. This bass player is a young jazzbo that can do it all with grace and chops to spare crafting a solid date that burns with a low key fire that doesn't quit. Lightly left leaning, on the progressive edge of mainstream, this is solid sitting down jazz ensemble work that keeps you in its groove throughout. Tasty stuff from a cat you might as well get to know now since you are going to be hearing a lot from him in the future. - Chris Spector, Midwest Record

"... by chance if you dig accessible music with layers of compelling intricacies and lingering shapes throughout then I can't say enough about the music and the remarkable interplay by this fearless quartet. Colin Dean carved rudiments of modern jazz into his voice without feeling indebted to playing traditional jazz. Thanks for doing you ... " - Rob Young, Urban Flux Blog

EDMAR CASTANEDA

Thursday, January 13 at 7:30 PM; $14

"A jazz harpist of imposing talent." - The New York Times

"the phenomenal Colombian harpist Edmar Castaneda, whose technically astounding approach to the instrument normally associated with classical music has been registering with scenesters over the past year. Covering independent, heavily grooving bass lines with his left hand while chording and also running counterpoint melodies and dazzling triplet figures with his right hand (a kind of Charlie Hunter or Joe Passian approach to the harp),..." - Jazz Times

Edmar Castaneda was born in 1978, in the city of Bogotá, Colombia. Since his move to the United States in 1994, Edmar has quite literally taken New York and the world stage by storm with the sheer force of his virtuosic command of the harp-revolutionizing the way audiences and critics alike consider an instrument commonly relegated to the "unusual category". A master at realizing beautiful complexities of time, while skillfully drawing out lush colors and dynamic spirit, Edmar has been characterized as "almost a world unto himself" (The New York Times). The legendary Paquito D'Rivera, Edmar's frequent collaborator, has remarked: Edmar is...an enormous talent, he has the versatility and the enchanting charisma of a musician who has taken his harp out of the shadow to become one of the most original musicians from the Big Apple.

In addition to his acclaimed performing career as an instrumentalist, which has included features at D'Rivera's Carnegie Hall tribute, The DC Jazz Festival (formerly the Duke Ellington Jazz Festival), Jazz at Lincoln Center, The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Tanglewood Jazz Festival, the 10th annual World Harp Congress and numerous dates with artists such as D'Rivera, Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, John Scofield, Chico O'Farrill ‘s Afro-Cuban Jazz Big Band and John Patitucci.

THE MAST feat HAALE

Thursday, January 13 at 9:30 PM; $15

The Mast is Haale and Matt Kilmer's new project. With Matt on percussion, and Haale on vocals and electric guitar, the Brooklyn-based duo create a propulsive sound that highlights Matt's drumming prowess and Haale's voice, "by turns deep and commanding, feather-light and breezy, and as rich and sensual as dark-chocolate fondue." (Flavorpill)

"Haale's warm, supple voice unfurled like a curlicue of smoke. Her band amplified rumble served as a reminder of the extent to which rock bands like the Doors and the Velvet Underground turned to the East for their most hypnotic efforts; here their borrowings were reclaimed with interest." - The New York Times

"An extraordinarily powerful vocalist. The emotions expressed in Haale's songs are as warm and inviting as the sounds..." - Jim Derogatis, Chicago Sun Times

"Brilliantly produced rhythms." - Popmatters

Before they established The Mast, Haale and Matt Kilmer were writing, performing, and touring together for 3 years under Haale's name. Starting in 2007, upon the release of the EPs, 'Paratrooper' and 'Morning,' they toured across the country, in Canada, and Europe playing such venues as the Bonnaroo festival, the David Byrne curated series at Carnegie Hall, the Hillside Festival, Celebrate Brooklyn, Mimi Festival in France, and Preservation Hall in New Orleans. In March 2008, they released the full-length album 'No Ceiling' which the Boston Globe called , 'one of the year's most memorable releases.'
