TV's 'Batgirl' Yvonne Craig Passes Away at 78

Variety reports that actress Yvonne Craig, perhaps best known for her role as the caped crusader's female sidekick Batgirl in the 1960's campy television series BATMAN, passed away on Monday, August 17th at the age of 78.

According to a spokesman, the actress died in her home in Pacific Palisades, surrounded by her family. She had recently been suffering from breast cancer that metastasized to her liver.

In addition to her role as 'Batgirl, Craig portrayed Martha, the green Orion Slave Girl who wanted to kill Captain Kirk, in TV's "Star Trek." Her TV credits include guest roles on "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.," "Fantasy Island," "The Mod Squad" and "The Many Lives of Dobie Gillis."

In film, she appeared opposite Elvis Presley in "It Happened at the World's Fair" and "Kissin' Cousins." Craig authored the book "From Ballet to the Batcave and Beyond," in 2000, which chronicled her extensive career as a ballet dancer and on the theatrical stage.

She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Aldrich, her sister Meridel Carson and nephews Christopher and Todd Carson.
