CNN reports that Anton Yelchin, perhaps best known for his role as Chekov in the recent STAR TREK franchise, was killed in a freak accident in Los Angeles early Sunday morning. The actor was 27 years old.

According to Los Angles law enforcement, after Yelchin stepped out of his car in his driveway, the vehicle slid backwards and trapped him against a brick pillar and a security fence.

"The victim was on his way to meet his friends for a rehearsal and when he didn't show up, his friends went to his house where they found him deceased by his car," LAPD's Jennifer Houser told CNN. "It appears that he momentarily left his car, leaving it in the driveway. He was behind the vehicle when it rolled backward and pinned him to the brick pillar causing the trauma that led to his death."

Yelchin's other film credits included "Like Crazy" and "Alpha Dog,"
