The Drama League (Executive Director, Gabriel Shanks; Artistic Director, Roger T. Danforth) is pleased to officially announce that it will open The Drama League Theater Center, a new, state-of-the-art facility that will bring world-class theater artists, emerging talents, and New York theatergoers together under one roof. The Center, located on the lobby level of the historic former AT&T Building at 32 Avenue of the Americas, in the heart of TriBeCa’s arts district, is scheduled to open in late 2012.

The Drama League Theater Center will include a brand-new laboratory/development space for theater artists to create and hone work for future productions, an administrative suite including computer workstations and conference space for artist use, flexible multi-purpose space for educational programming and special events, a box office, design capability for sound/projection/video, and a variety of new programs and audience-focused series. Once open to the public, The Drama League Theater Center will offer artist residencies, play readings, open rehearsals, developmental workshops, lectures, classes, seminars, discussions, conferences, theatre-focused social gatherings and more.

“After nearly a century supporting America’s artistic community, we are thrilled to give the world’s most promising talents a place to develop and create stunning new works, while expanding to offer theater lovers new opportunities to deepen and enhance their understanding of the theatre,” states Drama League Executive Director Gabriel Shanks.

FXFOWLE, the architects behind Lincoln Center’s new North Plaza and Alice Tully Hall, are the designers of The Drama League Theater Center. In addition to its many new programs, The Drama League Theater Center will serve as the base of the acclaimed Directors Project, an internationally-renowned education program for young stage directors and their collaborators. It will also be the principal home for the Audience Project, which provides services, discussions with master artists, show discounts, and other opportunities to theater lovers.

The construction of the project is being funded by generous contributions from private and public foundations, individual donors, and Drama League members. To donate to the “Create The Space” campaign, contact Drama League Development Manager Toby Newman at (212) 244-9494.
