SWEENEY TODD, THE MERRY WIDOW & More Set for Capitol City Opera's 2014 Season

Capitol City Opera Company, one of the only opera companies in the Southeast that champions local singers and produces opera accessible to everyone, is pleased to announce its 2014 season, celebrating 30 years in the Atlanta metro-area.

The Company's first fully-staged production of the season will be Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, March 7-9, 2014. This masterpiece of murderous barber-ism and culinary crime tells the infamous tale of an unjustly exiled barber who returns to 19th century London, seeking revenge against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. All three performances will be at Oglethorpe University's Conant Performing Arts Center. This production is co-sponsored by Arts and Ideas at Oglethorpe University.

Capitol City Opera Company's (CCOC) fall 2014 production (September dates TBD), also held at Oglethorpe University's Conant Performing Arts Center, will be Franz Lehár's The Merry Widow. In this light-hearted operetta, not widely performed in the United States, a prince from a small kingdom courts a wealthy widow to keep her money in the country. Hijinks ensue, money is won and lost, but in the end, the pair of lovers is wiser and happier. This story is a perfect mix of fun and slightly bittersweet romance.

The annual fundraiser, On the Light Side, will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at 8 p.m. at Church of the Atonement in Sandy Springs, and will feature the music of Cole Porter. Attendees are invited to bring their own "Indoor Picnic" dinners, including adult libations, and experience beautiful music in the air-conditioned indoors. The event features a silent auction and door prizes.

The Company will continue to perform its monthly Dinner and a Diva series. These performances are held on the third Tuesday of each month at Petite Auberge in Toco Hills, and every other month at Sugo in Johns Creek. It features singers from the Atlanta-area who perform highlights from a variety of operatic repertoire. Dinner and a Diva is a great way to learn about opera, interspersed with wonderful courses of food and wine.

The Company's Madrigal Singers will also be bringing holiday cheer in performances around Atlanta throughout the 2014 holiday season. A complete schedule and highlighted repertoire can be found online at ccityopera.org.

For more than 25 years, CCOC has been introducing opera to school students throughout the Southeast. Keeping true to its mission of making opera accessible to everyone, this season, the Company will present three 45-minute shows addressing different life and social skills and presenting complex ideas such as self-esteem, teamwork, honesty - even scientific theory - in a fresh away.
