Lawrence Edelson, Artistic and General Director of Opera Saratoga, announced today the winter/spring schedule of events for the company's Saratoga Sings! program. The schedule includes previously announced collaborations, along with a new special event in February with Grammy nominated baritone Christopher Dylan Herbert, in partnership with Saratoga Spa State Park.

Introduced by Edelson in 2015, the Saratoga Sings! program was designed to increase Opera Saratoga's civic footprint, build awareness of the company in the region, and increase access to opera and classical vocal music for diverse audiences. Through the program, Opera Saratoga offers free monthly performance events leading up to the company's Summer Festival. The program leverages collaborative partnerships with historical and cultural organizations, as well as local businesses. Saratoga Sings! is supported in part by OPERA America, generously funded by the Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation.

Updated Schedule of Winter/Spring Events:

JANUARY: Saratoga Sings Under the Influence

Thursday Jan. 26, 2017 @ 7:00pm: The Parting Glass, 40 Lake Avenue, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866

Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017 @ 8:00pm: Parish Public House, 388 Broadway, Albany, NY 12207

Opera Saratoga presents a rambunctious program of opera under the influence - of liquor, elixirs, poisons, and magic spells - in the midst of the region's thriving nightlife! This program will be presented at two popular bars - one in Saratoga Springs, and one in Albany. The concerts will feature favorite scenes from operas and musicals - including The Elixir of Love, Romeo and Juliette, The Abduction from the Seraglio, Hansel and Gretel, The Cradle Will Rock, The Song of the Flame, Pal Joey, The Drowsy Chaperone, and more! Soprano Keely Futterer, mezzo soprano Edith Grossman, tenor Dylan Elza, and bass Jorgeandrés Camargo are featured in this fun-filled program, with music direction by Gloria Kim.

FEBRUARY: Saratoga Sings a Winter's Journey

Saturday, February 11th @ 2:00pm: Saratoga Spa State Park - Geyser Picnic Area,

Saratoga Springs, NY 12866

  • In the event of inclement weather, this performance will take place on Sunday, February 12th @ 2:00pm

(please note, this program replaces the previously announced Saratoga Sings for the Win, which will be rescheduled next season)

In partnership with Spa State Park, Opera Saratoga presents Grammy nominated baritone Christopher Dylan Herbert in Winterize, an outdoor adaptation of Franz Schubert's Winterreise, reimagined for baritone and transistor radios. Created by Herbert in collaboration with Make Music New York and director JJ Hudson, the performance leads the audience through an outdoor route that enhances the sequence of Schubert's iconic song cycle. The audience participates in this truly unique performance by accompanying Herbert with hand-held transistor radios that amplify Schubert's piano part, played by Timothy Long, and soundscaped by Jonathan Zalben. The incredible winter beauty of Saratoga Spa State Park will become the backdrop for a truly once-in-a-lifetime musical experience. Please note that as this program will take place in a part of the park that is closed to the public during the winter months, advance registration is required and tickets will be required to gain access to the performance area.

MARCH: Saratoga Sings at the Cinema

Saturday, March 18th @ 2:00pm: The Palace Theatre, 19 Clinton Avenue, Albany, NY 12866

Opera Saratoga, in partnership with the historic Palace Theater in Albany, will present Saratoga Sings at the Cinema - a free screening of the 1999 film Cradle Will Rock by Tim Robbins that fictionalizes the true events that surrounded the development of Marc Blitzstein's historic work, which will receive a major revival in a new production at Opera Saratoga during the company's 2017 Summer Festival.

APRIL: Saratoga Sings of Art and Inspiration

Sunday, April 9, 2017 @ 3:00pm: The Hyde Collection, 161 Warren Street, Glens Falls, NY 12801

Tuesday, April 11, 2017 @ 7:00pm: The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Galley at Skidmore College, 815 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866

Thursday, April 13, 2017 @ 6:00pm: The Albany Institute of History and Art, 125 Washington Avenue, Albany, NY 12210

Amidst three of the region's most exciting art museums and galleries, Opera Saratoga presents three free concerts of opera and song inspired by great artists and works of art. Complete program and artists to be announced.

All Saratoga Sings! events are free to the public. Advance registration for Saratoga Sings! events is highly recommended (and required for Saratoga Sings a Winter's Journey), as space is limited. Reservations may be made on Opera Saratoga's website beginning three weeks prior to each event at www.operasaratoga.org/saratoga-sings

ABOUT OPERA SARATOGA
