Boston Lyric Opera today announced the location for its Opera Annex production of Philip Glass' In The Penal Colony. The one-act, two-character chamber opera based on a 1914 Franz Kafka short story will be staged in The Cyclorama at the Boston Center for the Arts from November 11-15, 2015. Tickets for In the Penal Colony and all of BLO's 2015/16 Season shows go on sale to the public Friday, July 31.

Dark, thought-provoking and disturbing, In the Penal Colony is the story of two characters - The Officer and The Visitor -- and an ominous machine designed to punish prisoners for their crimes. The work, performed in English, features Glass' signature driving music composed for string quintet. Boston Lyric Opera's artistic advisor John Conklin worked alongside Glass and Director JoAnne Akalaitis as Set Designer for the 2000 world premiere at Seattle's ACT Theatre.

Emmanuel Music Artistic Director Ryan Turner conducts. BLO Emerging Artist alumni Neal Ferreira (as The Visitor) and David McFerrin (as The Officer) star in the production, which will be directed by R.B. Schlather (a 2014/2015 BLO Emerging Artist alumnus) and will feature set design by Julia Noulin-Mérat, costumes by Terese Wadden and lighting by JAX Messenger.

Opera Annex programs have been successful additions to Boston Lyric Opera's past five seasons, reflecting the Company's mission to build awareness and support for opera through compelling, fully-staged chamber operas with wide audience appeal in unique and accessible settings.
