In Tall Buildings, aka Chicago songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Erik Hall, has released a new video for "Curtain," the latest single from his forthcoming album Akinetic. The video is directed by Rick Alverson, an American independent filmmaker known for his feature length filmsEntertainment and The Comedy, as well as music videos for the likes of Angel Olsen, Sharon Van Etten, and Oneohtrix Point Never. (Alverson is also half of the band Lean Year, who's 2017 debut album was recorded and co-produced by Hall.)
"Curtain" is the second offering from the sonically-sprawling new albumAkinetic, produced by Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Iron & Wine, Califone) and due out March 2nd on Western Vinyl. With its arpeggiated analog synth backbone supporting a wailing electric guitar and lush three-part vocal harmonies, the song emerges as Hall's purest statement yet of his signature experimental chamber pop. Providing an obscured sense of space, Alverson's video depicts a multi-dimensional reality among mirrored elevators, dark corners, and crashing water. "It's all about the elevators," he explains. "We tracked down an early 70s Otis in Richmond, VA, but the mirrors couldn't beat the standard, flat-metallic glaze of the small generic we took back up to the ground floor from the basement of the old tobacco warehouse in Shockoe Bottom. It was small, but faces bent in a way that made you feel like someone lonesome, like someone was being born in the thick silver on the other side of the panel."Check out the video!
