The Con- which Tegan and Sara co-produced with Chris Walla, a founding member of Death Cab for Cutie - was both an artistic and commercial breakthrough. It was Tegan and Sara's first release to chart on the Billboard 200 (entering at No. 34) and also their first to appear on the Alternative Albums and Top Rock Albums charts. In the band's native Canada, The Con peaked at No. 5 and was nominated for a Juno Award and a Polaris Music Prize.
Tegan says, "The first four records of our career felt like we were navigating winding mountain roads. With The Con, it was obvious we had turned a corner and hit an open stretch of highway. It felt like our first fully realized Tegan and Sara record. Which made it then and still makes it now a very important record to us."
Sara notes, "To launch The Con in 2007, we performed the album sequentially. It was a difficult album to translate live, because most of the songs had deep layers of ideas and textures, taken directly from our home demos and made even denser in the studio. Much of the album hasn't been performed live in nearly a decade and it's with great pleasure that we take these beloved songs back to the stage."
The Con took a year to write and over three months to record and mix. Tegan recalls, "We wanted to build the finished record from our original home demos. Chris Walla, who co-produced with us, accepted this challenge. We recorded every keyboard, guitar and vocal first, before we brought in bass and drums." The album, which was released on July 24, 2007, featured Death Cab for Cutie drummer Jason McGerr, AFI bassist Hunter Burgan, The Rentals' Matt Sharp and Kaki King.
Filter said, "The Con is a startlingly dark, yet characteristically vibrant offering, featuring a band that's learned to harness the energy-highs, while tempering pretty (even pastoral) pop-folk with a new, deeply-affecting brand of melancholy." Rolling Stone praised it as "uncommonly catchy" andMojo said, "The Con rockets beyond even their own high standards." Awarding the album five stars, The Guardian noted, "The Tegan-penned title track, a brittle confessional about clinging to feelings for a former lover, builds to an irresistibly swooning chorus; 'Back In Your Head', with its unnerving insight into relationship scruples, is built around an unsettlingly cheery piano hook, while the jangly guitar subtext to 'Burn Your Life Down' is tenderly sad and sexy...When your heart feels like a stone in your breast, The Con will prove a perfect, sweetly addictive companion." Twin sisters born in Canada, Tegan and Sara have sold over one million albums, and have received seven Gold certifications, one Double Platinum certification, three Juno Awards, two Polaris Prize nominations and a GRAMMY® nomination. They have performed on some of the world's biggest stages, from the 2015 Oscar Telecast to major festivals, such as Coachella, Lollapalooza and Glastonbury. Their current album, Love You to Death, is the follow up to 2013's Heartthrob, which contained "Closer" - a multi-format hit that has been certified Gold in the U.S. and Double Platinum in Canada.
