R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe made a surprise appearance on last night's The Colbert Report, where host Stephen Colbert said goodbye to the iconic band by putting Stipe on his Rock and Roll Shelf of Fame (literally.) They were then joined by guest Brian Eno for an impromptu acapella rendition of "Lean On Me." R.E.M. shocked the world with the news that they had decided to "call it a day as a band" via a statement on their website. The beloved band announced that they will release their final album, R.E.M., Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage, 1982 - 2011, on Warner Bros. Records this Tuesday November 15th. The album is a 40-song career-spanning retrospective that for the first time ever collects songs from R.E.M.'s entire back catalog, including the band's early years on the IRS label in addition to their Warner Bros. Records catalog, as well as three new songs, and is currently available for pre-order on on iTunes here and Amazon here.
