Phony Ppl Make Triumphant Return On Genre-Defying New Album, m?'z?-ik

Today, Brooklyn-based quintet Phony Ppl have unleashed their genre-defying sophomore album, m?'z?-ik via 300 Entertainment. Blending soul, funk, R&B and more, each song on the 11-track set plays as an extended jam between five musicians playing at their peak.

Last week, NPR Music premiered the album via First Listen, calling it a "stepping stone for the Brooklyn band as a subconscious vacation for the listener while moving through the world... or maybe even a retreat from it." The collection has also made fans at Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, Complex and NYLON, who called it "ethereal as hell."

Recorded over four years in various locations including the band's own home studios, m?'z?-ik was self-produced by the quintet and was mixed by GRAMMY Award winner Qmillion. The album features everything that fans have come to love from the band - jazz breakdowns, funky bossa nova, saxophone solos and a palette of playful songwriting, building a niche of their own in an often crowded scene.

All five members of Phony Ppl come from a long line of musical families which helped cultivate their own love for the artform. Each member attended music classes and schools across the country, including Juilliard and the School of Rock, before finding each other in 2009. Those early after-school jam sessions evolved into the band's current lineup, featuring Elbee Thrie on vocals, Elijah Rawk on lead guitar, Matt "Maffyuu" Byas on drums, Aja Grant on keys and Bari Bass on bass guitar.

Following the release of m?'z?-ik, Phony Ppl will play select headlining shows in California, before joining Pusha T on the second leg of his Daytona Tour. See below for full dates.
