The Texas guitar tradition runs deep. It's a gutsy school of blues playing, marked by thick tones, aggressive attack and tons of technique, all delivered in a flamboyant, swaggering style that is endemic to the Lone Star State. From T-Bone Walker and Clarence Gatemouth Brown on through Albert Collins and Freddie King, Billy Gibbons and the late Stevie Ray Vaughan, the tradition of the Texas guitar slinger has lived on. One name that ranks atop that exclusive list is Johnny Winter, the international ambassador for rocking Texas blues for the last thirty years.

His latest Grammy nominated disc titled "I'm A Bluesman" out on Virgin Records, adds to his Texas-sized reputation. For this release, Johnny has again paired with his longtime producer Dick Shurman (Robert Cray, Albert Collins, Roy Buchanan), as well as Tom Hambridge (Susan Tedeschi, George Thorogood). Backing him on this disc is his scorching road-tested touring band of ace harmonica man James Montgomery, guitarist Paul Nelson who co -penned the title track, bassist Scott Spray and drummer Wayne June. Guest appearances feature such friends as keyboardist Reese Wynans (from Stevie Ray Vaughan's celebrated backing group Double Trouble) among others. Don't miss Johnny and his band on their current worldwide tour as he introduces audiences to his new material while reacquainting them with his iconic guitar playing.

In early 1965 as the "British invasion" dominated the American music scene, two rockers from Long Island, Steve Boone and Joe Butler, teamed up with two folkies from Greenwich Village, John Sebastian and Zal Yanovsky, to form the Lovin' Spoonful and go on to record and perform some of the songs that would dominate the charts and establish them among the greats of the mid-sixties era.

Combining the best of folk music and rock and roll, with a touch of country thrown in, they gave us such hits as "Do You Believe in Magic," "Daydream," "You Didn't Have to be So Nice," "Nashville Cats" and the anthem for a hot July evening, "Summer in the City." All this in the span of 4 years and 5 albums. They toured almost constantly during this period and were one of the first rock bands to perform on college campuses almost as much as for teenage concert goers.

March 6, 2000 marked a milestone for the band. They were officially inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame.

For more than 30 years, ROBERT GORDON has been one of the defining musical influences of his generation. Delivering his vocals with power and intensity, he has created a unique rock & roll attitude â€" driven by love, hurt, sadness and absolute conviction.

Long before the first rehearsals of The Stray Cats and the numerous rockabilly bands that followed, ROBERT GORDON reinvented the rockabilly sound of the ‘50s and introduced it to the punk rock audiences of the ‘70s.

After a stint in bands like the Tuff Darts in the ‘70s, Gordon pursued a solo career and began performing raucous rockabilly, the music he grew up on in Washington, D.C. He paired up with veteran guitarist Link Wray for his first two albums, “Robert Gordon with Link Wray and Fresh Fish Special†. Fresh Fish Special also featured Elvis Presley back-up singers The Jordanaires. These critically-acclaimed records were released during punkâ€TMs heyday and were subsequently embraced by that scene. Besides his own songs, Gordon covered songs made famous by Johnny Horton, Bill Monroe, Gene Vincent and Billy Lee Riley, as well as songs by Bruce Springsteen, Marshall Crenshaw and John Lennon.

In his two decade recording career, the Brooklyn native has carved for himself a solid career as one of the leading purveyors of unapologetic, unabashed romantic music. Appetite for Destruction has been paying tribute to Guns N' Roses for over ten years, packing out venues throughout the tri-state area. Among their most noted gigs was performing as the opening act for Gilby Clarke (twice), countless headlining gigs at BB King's in Manhattan, and a co-headlining act for Upstate New York's Stemstock which boasted over 3,000 people. They've also performed at other popular New York venues such as the Vanderbilt, L'Amour's, Jones Beach, Northern Lights, Mulcahy's, the Village Pub, and Sullivan Hall with some of the best tribute bands in the business.

Unlike many other tribute bands, AFD focuses explicitly on the audio and visual aspects of Guns N' Roses, and strives for duplication in both areas. These days, it's not enough to just sound like the band you're impersonating; patrons can get that act from countless cover bands. They come to see a show, and that includes the appearance, enthusiasm, and on-stage antics expected from a national act. Appetite for Destruction delivers that and more. They focus on Gn'R's earlier music, like Appetite, but they also play many songs from Gn'R Lies and Use Your Illusion I and II and even the Spaghetti Incident? Sometimes they even throw in a song that Gn'R played live that never made it to an album to keep with the Gn'R spirit.Their catalog of Guns N' Roses songs is greater than that of any other tribute band in the country. They are able to perform over fifty songs, which allows them to tailor every set to each venue's specific needs.

Georgia funk rock band Mother's Finest might appear to be only a blip on the radar screen of rock history, but not to any of the headlining bands they've stolen shows from -- or any of the audiences who saw it happen. Following in the footsteps of the racially-mixed Sly & the Family Stone, Mother's Finest blendEd White guitarist Moses Mo and drummer B.B. "Queen" Borden with black vocalists Joyce Kennedy and Glenn Murdock, bassist Wyzard, and keyboardist Mike, for its 1976 self-titled debut album. Tracks like "Rain" and the slightly controversial "Niggazz Can't Sing Rock & Roll" made enough of a ripple to get the band out of Georgia clubs and into regional touring. The follow-up album Another Mother Further lived up to its title. The opening track was a cover of the Holland-Dozier-Holland songwriting team's "Mickey's Monkey," made popular by Smokey Robinson. But the guitar riff was a blatant copy of Jimmy Page's from the Led Zeppelin song "Custard Pie," released two years earlier. Perhaps because the song was a cover, or the fact that they stole from blues legends early in their career, Led Zeppelin never sued and the track (along with others like "Piece of the Rock" and "Hard Rock Lover") helped make Another Mother Further the group's springboard.

For the remainder of the 1970s, Mother's Finest became the most dangerous opening act in rock, blowing away headliners like Aerosmith, Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush, and Ted Nugent. A subpar third album, 1978's Mother Factor, took nothing away from the band's live performances, as vocalists Murdock -- and particularly the powerful Kennedy -- enthralled audiences over the funk rock backline of Mo, Wizzard, Borden, and Mike. The 1979 album Mother's Finest Live featured not only original staples like "Watch My Stylin'" and "Give You All the Love," but also Kennedy singing a stunning cover of Jefferson Airplane's "Somebody to Love" and the musicians shining on a rearranged version of Steppenwolf's "Magic Carpet Ride." It would prove a last hurrah, for Mother's Finest didn't translate well into the 1980s and never achieved its due in the largely-white world of rock. Mo, Mike, and Borden would leave the band, the latter to go polar-opposite by joining Southern rockers Molly Hatchet, but Kennedy, Murdock and Wizzard fought on. After dabbling in dance music with several different lineups in the 1980s, the trio formed an all-African-American band in the early '90s by recruiting guitarist John Hayes and drummer Dion Derek. The angry, rocking result was the 1992 CD Black Radio Won't Play This Record, which proved prophetic despite being the band's best since its 1979 live album (yet white radio wouldn't play it either). It's now in the cut-out bins; ignored or forgotten -- much like Mother's Finest -- by all except a select few. Still active, the group's latest CD is called Not Yer Mother's Funk -- The Very Best of Mother's Finest, and features mostly material from the first two albums.
