Andrew Bird's intimate "Gezelligheid" performances make their Nashville debut this December for a two-night residency at the Downtown Presbyterian Church. The annual winter series will return to Chicago for its seventh year with four nights at Fourth Presbyterian Church. Appropriating a Dutch term that loosely translates to "cozy," the performances concentrate mainly on instrumental violin pieces amplified only by Bird's signature giant Victrola horns. Tickets go on sale this Friday-see the holiday dates below in addition to a new leg of West Coast shows.
Bird is featured on the Lumineers cover of Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues" released last week. The track premiered on Entertainment Weekly to coincide with the release of Ken Burns' new Vietnam docuseries The Vietnam War, which premiered Sunday, September 17 on PBS. Supported by Spotify, the track is part of an exclusive collection of protest songs to promote the series. Bird's score for Lynn Shelton's new film, Outside In, made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. The score received a rave review from Variety, who proclaimed, "Having pop iconoclast Andrew Bird as composer was an inspired choice, as his largely acoustic score adds some playful edges to the overall texture" and The Hollywood Reporter hailed the "excellent score by Andrew Bird." New episodes of Bird's Facebook Live series "Live from the Great Room," are also forthcoming. The series streams live from Bird's living room, putting the creative process on display for fans as he performs and converses with friends and collaborators in a candid, intimate setting. Paper hails the series as "compelling as f" and "delightful," while Nerdist praises the "always beautifully done live concerts." Previous guests include Fiona Apple, Matt Berninger of The National, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Lucius, Tift Merritt, Dawes, Esperanza Spalding, Jackson Browne, Theaster Gates, Jimbo Mathus of the Squirrel Nut Zippers, Dan Wilson, Chris Thile, Blake Mills, John C. Reilly and Tom Brosseau.
