THOR: THE DARK WORLD Smashes Weekend Box Office with $86.1 Million

THOR has returned.

Mavel's follow-up to its 2011 film starring Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman, THOR: THE DARK WORLD easily bested the box office competition this weekend, raking in a god-like haul of $86.1 million. In Friday midnight sales alone, the film managed to take in $7.1 million - double the first installment's $3.2 million take.

SincMarvel's "Thor: The Dark World" continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel's "Thor" and "Marvel's The Avengers," Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos...but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. To defeat an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor sets upon his most dangerous and personal journey yet, forced into an alliance with the treacherous Loki to save not only his people and those he loves...but our universe itself.

Paramount's JACKASS PRESENTS: BAD GRANDPA with Johnny Knoxville took in an additional $11.3 million, bumping its total to just north of $78.7 million, earning it the second spot at the weekend box office.

The new animated comedy FREE BIRDS, with Woody Harrelson and Owen Wilson, grossed $11.18 million. It's total now rests at $30.1 million.

LAST VEGAS, boasting all all-star Oscar-winning cast inluding Morgan Freeman and Robert DeNiro, did meager business at the box office during its second weekend. The film took the fourth spot, earning $11.1 million. Its total gross thus far now sits at $33.5 million.

The film adaptation of Orson Scott Card's ENDER'S GAME faultered during its second outing, taking in just $10.2 million. With its total domestic gross now at $44 million, Lionsgate is reportedly unsure of the film's potential as a franchise.
