According to the UK's The Sun, the controversial Princess Diana documentary UNLAWFUL KILLING, from director Keith Allen, has been scrapped after it was unable to obtain insurance to protect its distributors against legal action. The film depicts the tragic death of Diana and her boyfriend Dodi Al Fayed as a murder plot involving her former father-in-law, Prince Philip.

The Sun reports that there were  87 "contentious allegations that would have to be cut before a British screening."  Although the studio planned to release the film in the US in August to mark the 15th anniversary of the deaths, the insurance was needed to protect European offices of the distributors.

A spokesman for the movie, which had its unofficial screening at both the Cannes Film Festival in France and the Galway Film Festival in Ireland in 2011 said, "Unlawful Killing has been sold all around the world. But there was a specific form of insurance needed by the US distributors to cover them for their French and UK offices. This proved impossible to secure. The film has been withdrawn in perpetuity."

UNLAWFUL KILLING had been funded by Dodi's father Mohamed Al Fayed, who has always maintained the deaths were not an accident. Diana and Dodi perished in 1997 when their car crashed in a Paris tunnel.
