Flavor Your Life, a European Union funded campaign dedicated to providing the latest olive oil industry news, shares an extra virgin olive oil ice cream recipe to top off your holiday desserts.

This ice cream recipe requires 4½ cups of milk, ¾ cup of extra virgin olive oil, 3/4 cup of sugar, 10 salt flakes. This recipe also requires a blender and an ice cream machine. In order to prepare the ice cream, start by heating up the milk with the sugar and salt flakes. Make sure it is mixed thoroughly. Next, add in the extra virgin olive oil.

Take the mixture and add it to a blender. Blend well and transfer the liquid into an ice cream machine. Allow the mixture to set for the time your ice cream machine suggests.

Carole Firenze, author of The Passionate Olive, speaks to why extra virgin olive oil can be a good pairing for pies. "You can create harmonious flavors by pairing Extra Virgin olive oil with food," she says. She also suggests how certain flavors can enhance dishes and what type of olive oil a dish like ice cream would require. "Use a mild intensity olive oil for dishes that require a subtle flavor, like fish, pesto, eggs or when baking. Use a medium intensity olive oil for dishes that call for fruity flavor enhancements, such as salads, grilled chicken, and vegetables. Use an intense olive oil for dishes that call for bold flavor, like pasta sauces, soups and grilled meats."
