Sydney Dance Company returns to Melbourne in 2014 with a brand new production, Interplay, playing from April 30 to May 10 in The Sumner at Southbank Theatre.

A highlight of the Company's 45th anniversary program this year, Interplay will see sixteen of Australia's finest contemporary dancers performing works from three prodigiously talented and internationally acclaimed contemporary choreographers, Sydney Dance Company Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela, Jacopo Godani, and Gideon Obarzanek.

Interplay opens in Sydney on March 15, before moving to Canberra, and then completing its three-city world premiere tour in Melbourne.

Sydney Dance Company last performed in Melbourne in November 2012, presenting their acclaimed multi-award winning work, 2 One Another, which scooped the pool at the 2013 Australian Dance Awards for Most Outstanding Choreography, Most Outstanding Performance by a Company, and Most Outstanding Female Dancer, adding to its 2012 Green Room Awards for Best Ensemble and Best Female Dancer. Late last year the Company toured the work to 16 cities around the globe, generating an outstanding response from audiences and critics alike, in South America, the USA and Russia.

Interplay opens with Rafael Bonachela's latest work, 2 in D Minor, an exploration of arguably one of the greatest pieces for solo violin ever written, JS Bach's majestic Violin Partita No. 2 in D Minor. The work sees dancers from the Sydney Dance Company ensemble joined on stage by acclaimed violinist Veronique Serret, a dialogue between duets and trios of dancers, as well as dancer and musician.

In Raw Models, esteemed Frankfurt-based Italian dancer/choreographer Jacopo Godani brings together a cast of Sydney Dance Company dancers. Initially created in 2011, Godani's work premiered in Sydney as part of the Company's season of Shared Frequencies. In 2014, this incredible artist returns to Australia to re-stage the work, which will be seen in Melbourne and Canberra for the first time as part of Interplay.

For the final piece in the program, former Sydney Dance Company dancer Gideon Obarzanek, who went on to found and direct contemporary Dance Company Chunky Move, will present a new work commissioned as part of Sydney Dance Company's 45th Anniversary celebrations. Created in collaboration with actor/writer/dramaturg David Woods - best known as one half of the internationally acclaimed double act, Ridiculusmus, L'Chaim! ('To life!' in Hebrew and Yiddish) is a playful and epic piece showcasing Obarzanek's genius for choreographing movement on a grand scale, employing the full force of the Sydney Dance Company ensemble, joined onstage by David Woods.

Says Obarzanek of returning to work with Sydney Dance Company, "As a young dancer with a nascent interest in choreography, I first travelled and performed with Sydney Dance Company around Australia and abroad in the early nineties. Now, over twenty years later I have returned to where I first began, a little older, hopefully a little wiser and with an admiration for this new generation of talented and enthusiastic dancers. Sydney Dance Company's embodiment of a living and evolving contemporary culture expressed through dance remains as exciting and significant as ever."

Three distinct visions for dance and a triple bill of breathtaking ambition, Interplay is a glorious salute to the state of contemporary dance from three of the most visionary dance voices of our generation. It is also an exhilarating reminder that sometimes the things that set us apart are the things that bind us closest together.

Interplay will have its world premiere season in Sydney from March 15 and will then transfer to Canberra from April 10 before arriving into Melbourne on April 30 for a strictly limited season of nine performances only. The Melbourne season marks the start of a new relationship for Sydney Dance Company with its new Melbourne home, at Southbank Theatre.

Tickets are $30-$75 and are available now at www.sydneydancecompany.com or 03 8688 0800.
