Choreographer Miro Magloire's New Chamber Ballet will bring its 2016-17 series to an end with performances June 10 at 8 PM and June 11 at 7 PM, and a Magloire premiere to John Cage's "Cheap Imitation" for violin. The Company welcomes dancer Kristine Butler, who previously danced with the Charlotte Ballet II, Romanian National Ballet, and San Francisco Ballet.

The evening's premiere is set to John Cage's "Cheap Imitation," originally written for Merce Cunningham's company in a version for two pianos. The composer subsequently made several arrangements of this piece, for solo piano, for orchestra, and finally for solo violin, which is the version Magloire is using, to be played by the company's resident violinist, Doori Na. Magloire's sophisticated musical taste has found his superb musicians, the virtuoso Na and brilliant pianist Melody Fader, distinguishing themselves in performances of music from Mozart to Debussy to Karlheinz Stockhausen.

Mozart, premiered just last April, will be repeated. Four dancers weave and unweave in kaleidoscopic formations in this work set to Mozart's violin sonata in C Major. Mozart was commissioned by Edward Petrou in loving memory of Rachel Petrou.
Friction "...provided another showcase for Doori Na.. Dancers moved thru the intricate partnering motifs with total assurance and dealt with the technical demands Miro makes on them with cool confidence." (oberonsgrove, November 2015) Friction, set to "In Flow" for violin by Richard Carrick, was commissioned by the Center for Faith and Work, New York City, through an artist residency.
The dramatic Leise, Leise (Softly, Softly), set to Luciano Berio's "Encores" for piano, was described by Michael Popkin as "...a family portrait where (the dancers) portrayed three sisters straight out of Anton Chekhov."

For his dark, atmospheric duet Voicelessness, Magloire has selected Swiss composer Beat Furrer's composition of the same name, subtitled "The snow has no voice."
Following the Company's June NYC performances, New Chamber Ballet looks forward to appearing at the Omaha Under The Radar Music Festival in Omaha, NE on July 8th; a September 22 & 23 season at the City Center Studios; and an October tour to Germany, including dances to music by late German-American composer Ursula Mamlok, to be performed at the Judische Kulturtage (Jewish Cultural Days) in Magdeburg, Germany.

New Chamber Ballet's City Center Studio Performances are made possible in part with public funds from Creative Engagement/Creative Learning, supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and administered by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, LMCC.net.
