La Bestia: Sweet Mother, An Immigrant's Tale is a musical and dance performance which was developed and debuted in New York's East Village in 2014, having played at Theater for the New City, as well as the 14th Street Y Theater. The show comes to The Theater at the Takoma Park Community Center (7500 Maple Avenue, Takoma Park, MD 20912) on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at 7:30 pm.

This dance/music event is a ballad which tells the story of Valencia, a Honduran immigrant who suffers indignities and threats to live her dream: coming to the United States to start a new life. It is told as myth, a story within a story within a story, bringing together the timeless and the particular.

The musical component, created by Desiree Miller (Cello) and Becca Weiss (singer) underscores the libretto (by Tom Block) with virtuosity and a variety of styles. The concert will include a special guest appearance by Liz Higgins, who will dance her own original choreography, created for this show. Liz has traveled the world dancing for the Nikolai Dance Company, as well as dancing at the Joyce Theater (NY), Kennedy Center (DC) and many other venues around the country and world.

Running time 50 minutes, including dance. Suggested donation: $10. CDs available for sale: $5. For more about the show, visit www.facebook.com/events/1505259419688851/?ref=5.
