Continuing the tradition of bringing compelling and powerful dance to the greater Baltimore region, the Howard Community College (HCC) dance program will present its second annual HCC Dance Student Showcase on November 11 and 12 at the college's Smith Theatre. This concert will feature the works of 11 student choreographers. The dances range in style to include contemporary, modern, hip hop, bollywood, step dance and more. The choreography will be performed by HCC students.

In her soulful solo, choreographer and performer, Ciarra Phillip examines how supernatural spirits influence ours. Alexander Wang also dances in his own solo, using the language of hip-hop to realize his vision. Tori Farnsworth explores floorwork and partnering in a modern based trio set to Disturbed's version of Sounds of Silence, contrasted by veteran choreographer Emily Fuller's exciting upbeat trio in which the dancers represent warriors.

There are three duets on the program that are all based in the language of contemporary modern. Diamond Freeman's duet deals with the obstacles women face in their daily lives and the bonds they form to overcome these obstacles. Miguel Ledesma dances in his own duet, which embodies a struggling relationship through movement and contact. Hannah Evans and Sylvia Lagas collaboratively choreograph and perform their own work focusing on the societal pressure girls feel to achieve perfection.

There are two student choreographers, Jessica Wilson and Jazzee Stowers who fuse bollywood dance from India with contemporary western music and movement. Jasper Breslin fuses the styles of hip hop with step dance and percussion, bringing percussion and movement together in a fun and eclectic mix of dance and bucket drumming.

Performances are November 11 at 3 p.m. and November 12 at 7 p.m. in HCC's Smith Theatre, located within the Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia, Maryland.

Tickets are $5. To purchase tickets, visit howardcc.edu/boxoffice or call 443-518-1500. Box office hours are Tuesdaythrough Friday, 12-6 p.m. and 90 minutes prior to each showtime.
