Award-winning choreographer/directors Janice Garrett and Charles Moulton will present the premiere of A Show of Hands--a New Music USA commission of a new, site-specific performance event that explores touch, gesture and the infinite expressive powers and possibilities of the human hand-- in six performances October 17 through 26 in the Pottruck Family Atrium of the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco. The work features an original score by Bay Area composer Dan Becker-performed by new contemporary ensemble, the Friction Quartet-a backdrop of hand drawings by Charles Moulton and six dancers. The free performances by Garrett + Moulton Productions will be given Thursday, October 17, at Noon; Friday, October 18, at 3:30 PM; Saturday, October 19, at 1 PM; Thursday, October 24, at 1 PM; Friday, October 25, at 3:30 PM; and Saturday, October 26, at 1 PM, and the San Francisco Jewish Community Center is located at 3200 California Street. "We believe that performance should help to generate a sense of community," observe Garrett and Moulton. "So we decided to present A Show of Hands in a locale that is actively engaged in the pursuit of offering creative and spiritual opportunities to hands, hearts and minds and supports a large and dynamic population at different times of the day. We are overjoyed to be presenting our work at the JCCSF."

A Show of Hands was commissioned through New Music USA's Commissioning Music/USA program, which is made possible by generous annual support from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs as well as endowment support from The Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust, The Helen F. Whitaker Foundation, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, The Rockefeller Brothers Fund, The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and the Francis Goelet Charitable Lead Trust. The performances are also supported, in part, by the Kenneth Rainin Foundation, San Francisco Arts Commission, Grants for the Arts/San Francisco Hotel Tax Fund, Zellerbach Family Foundation and generous individual donors.
