Käfig is a company known for its fusion of styles along with its influence from artists around the world. Käfig means "cage" in German and Arabic, which serves as a metaphor and mantra for Mourad Merzouki, Artistic Director, to live outside of the box daily. Merzouki creates sophisticated works meant for the stage, with the intention of transforming street dance. Käfig has given more than 2200 shows in 61 countries before more than one million spectators with Merzouki at the forefront of the international hip-hop dance scene.

Merzouki began practicing martial arts and circus arts at a young age. At the age of fifteen he became intrigued by hip-hop dance and began his training extensively. In 1989, Merzouki and a group of other dancers created the company, Accrorap. Merzouki wished to develop his own artistic style thus creating his own company, Compagnie Käfig, in 1996.

This all-male, Franco-Brazilian company flavors its works with dare-devilish circus skills, street-dance, martial arts, and the fun and energetic hip-hop vocabulary as well as other choreographic and artistic languages. Incredibly fast-paced, their complex rhythm and remarkable athleticism take the art of street-dance to a new level of sophistication. "The dancers - standouts, all of them - are gleeful and charming when they groove and slide, and simply jaw-dropping when they pitch and fly." (Boston Globe)

Irvine Barclay Theatre supports a wide range of dance, presenting versatile and international productions. The presentation of Compagnie Käfig represents the urban movement of contemporary dance as a part of the 2014-15 Contemporary Dance Series.

Compagnie Käfig plays a significant role in representing hip-hop in the concert dance scene. Käfig combines culture and innovation to showcase a side of dance not typically seen on stages.

Irvine Barclay Theatre is an independent non-profit organization established with the vision of creating a unique performing arts venue.
