Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company, sought after for their impactful and virtuosic works, launched its first multi-performance season in celebration of their 15th Anniversary on February 14. In celebration, the company has embarked on an innovative and creatively progressive virtual season unveiling weekly a premiere dance video that showcases the versatility of Gwirtzman's choreography. From technical to abstract, serious to satirical, these videos serve as a countdown to the culmination of this celebration at BAM Fisher later this spring.

The first five videos of series 1 are now available on the company's website and Youtube channel. Series 2, a film series entitled "From Brazil With Love" commences this Sunday, March 23rd. These installments provide fans and audiences an intimate journey through the beautiful landscape of Brazil. The series is an apparent and eloquent exploration of site specificity in regard to the creation and interpretation of movement. The Brazil series celebrates the culture and people of Bahia, Brazil--its topography, its fluctuating climates, its past and present political upheaval and its proximity to the water. They represent a celebration of life and of time--and the ephemeral nature of both.Gwirtzman is well traveled and serves as the perfect tour guide, using the universal language of dance as his medium in the aim to preserve the range of fleeting moments we experience in a lifetime. In this series, Gwirtzman has distilled his time in Bahia for audiences everywhere, where they can have a front row seat and experience time, place, and emotion through the eyes of another.

Chegada, the first film in this series, will be available for viewing at http://www.gwirtzmandance.org/fifteen, on Sunday, March 23rd, beginning at noon, as will the four films to follow.

These fifteen weeks' worth of events will culminate in the world premiere of The Oracle, May 30-June 1, 2014, at BAM Fisher. The one-of-kind 15th Anniversary performance will feature a robust cast of dancers and will be simultaneously live-streamed.

"From Brazil With Love" Series Descriptions

March 23 - Chegada Premiere

Returning to Brazilian soil after ten years, Gwirtzman filmed Chegada, meaning arrival in Portuguese, highlighting the beauty of the natural landscape.

March 30 - Pier Premiere

Pier captures Gwirtzman dancing on a pier, with a full tide as a backdrop and water lapping at his heels on three sides.

April 6 - Into the Streets Premiere

Filmed during historic protests, Gwirtzman and a cast of Brazilian dancers of diverse backgrounds take to the streets of Salvador, Bahia, the former capital of Brazil, in a peaceful response to the violent uprisings. In the heart of Afro-Brazil, just blocks away from where Michael Jackson famously shot his video "They Don't Care About Us," the dance encapsulates the Company's manifesto that dance is for everyone.

April 13 - Crab World Premiere

It's a crab's world after all. Finding his inspiration from the amazing activity and energy found in the basin of the Atlantic, Gwirtzman imagines life from a crab's perspective in an abstract close-up on nature.

April 20 - Rock the Boat Premiere

Rocking both the landscape and boundaries between dance genres, a bikini-clad Gwirtzman humorously plays with classical, improvisational, and hip-hop styles as he explores a grouping of empty wooden boats at low-tide.
